Murch wanted to make a film that was more faithful to the source material, and drew inspiration from both 'The Marvelous Land of Oz' and 'Ozma of Oz,' and cast a young Fairuza Balk in her first film role as little Dorothy Gale, giving us a Dorothy who, unlike Judy Garland, was actually a little girl.
Dorothy later awakens in the crate to find herself back in Oz and sitting in the Deadly Desert, which has the ability to turn anyone to sand upon touch. Dorothy also discovers that she is being accompanied by her favorite chicken from her farm, Billina (Denise Bryer's voice), who now has the ability to talk.
Though Return To Oz takes its cue from The Wizard Of Oz, rather than Baum's books, in portraying Dorothy's trip to the magical land as a dream, the framing device it uses is more sinister.

Was Dorothy just dreaming?
She eventually lands in Oz but by the movie's end, she wakes up in her bed with her family surrounding her. This reassures the viewer that the whole ordeal was simply a dream.
