Goofy is known for his slapstick comedy style, and you'll almost always find him alongside his friends, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
There doesn't seem to be an official reason for Disney's retirement of these once-beloved Mickey Mouse theatrical shorts. It's possible that the famous mouse's popularity with the public is waning, and that the current generation of children aren't as attached to the mouse man or his films as generations past.
For years, Mickey was simply too vanilla to carry an entire movie on his back, which makes sense. If his status as a role model impacted what the writer's could do with a short feature, then it stands to reason that it would be exponentially more difficult to create a movie with Mickey as the main protagonist.

Disney has not provided an official explanation for this oddity, but theories suggest that Goofy evolved from a dog while Pluto did not, or that it was meant as a contrast between a confused Goofy and a obedient Pluto. No clear answer may ever be given.

The Goofy cartoons Tiger Trouble and African Diary were featured in this episode, and it was said that the goofy from these cartoons were in fact named Amos Goofy, and that he was Junior's grandfather and Goofy's father. In later printings of the comic adaptation of this episode, Amos was renamed Hunter Goofy.
