Since the comic takes place 14 years after the first film, Spider's origins are told through flashbacks. In the Avatar comics, it's revealed that Spider was born to Quaritch and an RDA pilot named Paz Sorroco while living on an RDA base.
During the battle, Quaritch is killed by Sully's Na'vi lover Neytiri. A copy of his consciousness is subsequently transferred by the RDA into a genetically grown Na'vi body, known as a Recombinant, which returns to Pandora to track down Sully alongside other Recombinants.

Feeling that leaving Quaritch to die would be like murder, Spider saves his life. Eventually, Spider sees how Quaritch has apparently lost the fight and is on the verge of drowning.
