It's also revealed why Lionel is angry with Lex; he blames his son for the death of his youngest son Julian Luthor, although Lex took the blame to protect the true killer: Lillian (Alisen Down), Lionel's mentally unwell wife.
Despite Lionel's cruelty towards Lex, he clearly cared for him, as he became frantically concerned for his safety during the meteor shower while meeting the Kents. He abandoned his ambition to control the Traveler and focused more on his business and family.

To have Lex committed, he had untraceable drugs placed in Lex's drink that made him hysterical, and "cleaned" up his messes that he made in the Luthor Mansion. Lionel then ordered for Lex to receive electroshock therapy at Belle Reve; afterward, Lex remembered little of the last seven weeks.
Chloe is at the Isis Foundation when Clark enters and tells Chloe about the message Lionel left for him and that the keys are the secret. Chloe says that Lionel left one of the keys for Clark in her desk, but Lex took it. Clark realizes that Lex killed Lionel for the key and super-speeds off.
During the story of Smallville, Lionel evolves from being a nemesis of Clark Kent (Tom Welling) who develops multiple schemes to uncover Clark's secrets, to becoming an ally who eventually dies to protect Clark's secret from his own son.
Who does Clark lose his virginity to in Smallville?
Lana and Clark start a relationship. After Clark lost his powers for saving the ones he loved, he decided that he and Lana could have a real and honest relationship and finally start dating. During this time, Lana finally felt that Clark was totally open with her and the two lost their virginity to each other.
Instead of helping Clark, Lionel said that he failed him as a father and that if he was a true Luthor he would have killed him by now and Lionel blamed himself. Lionel started to beat Kent with his belt and ranted about how only the strong survive and how he will be the strongest in this earth or any other.
Lex's fate as a villain is fully sealed a few episodes later in "Descent" when he murders Lionel. Still, while Lionel Luthor's death was Smallville's most tragic, Julian's death is, in a sense, also the death of Lex Luthor.
When she learns that Lex set up a fake pregnancy in order to get her to marry him in the season six finale "Phantom", Lana effectively ends the marriage and fakes her own death to escape Lex after he threatens her. She also frames Lex for her murder, to punish him for his betrayal.
Lionel met his end in a season 7 episode after being killed by his son, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Lionel's original role in the Superman prequel series was shaped by his relationship with Lex, who secretly longed to earn the respect and love of his father.

Lex's need for power makes him prone to jealousy and pride. Because of this, he could never be okay with Clark being more powerful than him. It was only a matter of time before Lex's jealousy caused a rift between the two and caused Lex to hate Clark.
In the 1960s it was revealed that his hatred was rooted in a childhood accident caused by the young Superman (then Superboy), which made Luthor go prematurely bald. From that period through the 1980s he was presented as a mad scientist bent on conquering the world.
Lionel was rescued by Lex and taken to the Smallville Medical Center, where he underwent surgery that saved his life, but left him blind. Lionel then went into therapy, and moved into the Luthor Mansion with Lex as he refused to be gawked at by others.
However, Lionel prevented Lex from discovering the truth by giving Clark an alibi. Clark and Lex's growing animosity towards each other made it unlikely that Clark would ever willingly tell Lex the truth about his origins and powers, but also invited the possibility that Lex would do anything to discover it.
Gina was deeply loyal to Lex, even willing to try and murder Lois Lane and Henry James Olsen, to cover up Lex murdering his father. Gina was killed by an assassin working for Edward Teague, after she discovered Clark Kent's secret.
It was a poorly-hidden secret that Chloe has been in love with Clark in some varying degree since the day they met, but her feelings were largely unrequited as Clark remains emotionally invested in his next-door neighbor Lana Lang (which Pete Ross described as Clark's "Lana blinders").
The series ends by moving seven years into the future, where Clark and Lois are finally getting married, and Clark has embraced his new identity as "Superman". "With 'Red Clark' he's completely aware of the consequences of his actions at the time, but he doesn't care!
The new take charge Clark Kent, who was fearless and bold, became very attractive to Lois Lane—proving that it was more about attitude and personality than superpowers that attracted her to Superman. Lois and the new Clark began dating, fell in love and eventually, he proposed the couple got married.
Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley) discovers Lex's location and uses a bomb to blow up Lex's travelling medical transport, seemingly killing him. Season ten revealed that Lex is barely alive and in hiding after the attempt of his life by Oliver, and had manufactured a number of clones in a struggle to heal himself.
It was revealed that Chloe was tortured and then killed herself with a cyanide pill to protect Oliver from Rick Flag. However it was later revealed that she'd actually faked her own death.
While being pursued by a drunk Lex, Lana died when her SUV was hit by a bus. Distraught over her death, Clark went to the Fortress of Solitude and asked Jor-El to reverse time, saving her from the car accident.
