The rescue is not a moment of unequivocal joy, for Ralph realizes that, although he is saved from death on the island, he will never be the same. He has lost his innocence and learned about the evil that lurks within all human beings.

Why did Ralph start crying?
Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy. These lines from the end of Chapter 12 occur near the close of the novel, after the boys encounter the naval officer, who appears as if out of nowhere to save them.
Someone from the tribe hears them talking to Ralph and punishes them. Ralph finds a place to sleep for the night. The next morning, his hiding place, a dense thicket, is betrayed by Samneric.
Although the naval officer saves Ralph, the ending of Lord of the Flies still is not particularly happy, and the moment in which the officer encounters the boys is not one of untainted joy. The officer says that he is unable to understand how upstanding British lads could have acted with such poor form.
A passing British Navy ship sees the fire and sends an officer ashore. The officer not only saves Ralph from being murdered by Jack, he also saves all the boys from the further violence that would surely have occurred had they stayed on the island.
Ralph is furious with Jack, because it was the hunters' responsibility to see that the fire was maintained. Jack and the hunters return from the jungle, covered with blood and chanting a bizarre song. They carry a dead pig on a stake between them.
Ralph is irritated because the huts keep falling down before they are completed and because, though the huts are vital to the boys' ability to live on the island, none of the other boys besides Simon will help him. As Ralph and Simon work, most of the other boys splash about and play in the lagoon.
At the end of the story, Jack's tribe sets the jungle on fire to drive Ralph into the open. Ironically, the smoke from Jack's destructive fire catches the attention of a passing ship and leads to their rescue.
Samneric do end up betraying Ralph, when one of them gives away Ralph's hiding place to Jack, the leader of the savage group of boys. They try to fix this mistake by giving Ralph information about Jack's plan to kill him as well as some meat for sustenance.
This chapter reveals the boys' responses to their actions of the night before, when they beat Simon to death in a tribal frenzy. Ralph is the only character who names the deed as murder and has a realistic, unvarnished view of his participation.
Jack must destroy Ralph for savagery to prevail over civilization. In the jungle, Ralph comes upon the skull of a pig hung on a spear staked into the ground.
At the end of Lord of the Flies, most of the boys survive. A littlun goes missing after the group builds a fire that gets out of control, and can be assumed to be dead. Simon gets killed by the group after they mistake him for the beast. Finally, Piggy dies when one of the boys in Jack's tribe throws a boulder on him.
Oh God, I want to go home. In Chapter 10, Ralph grapples with his grief the morning after the boys kill Simon. Ralph understands that he has committed an unspeakable act. His new knowledge of his and the other boys' capacity for violence causes him to fear their situation evne more than before.
