The Dark Knight Rises reworked Bane's origin, making him a trained member of Ra's al Ghul's League of Shadows whose motivation is to destroy Gotham for its decadence and corruption, finishing his late leader's work. Why is Bane disfigured?
As Talia left the prison, Bane became overwhelmed by attackers, and was severely injured after the conflict was settled. Extremely disfigured after the fight, the prison's local doctor examined Bane, but could do nothing to ease his pain, other than wrap bandages around him.
The only moment during The Dark Knight Rises when Bane is not seen wearing the mask is during a flashback, during which Bane helps Talia al Ghul escape from the Pit, an underground prison where both are being held, though Bane is attacked for helping her find freedom.
Bane's origin story is established in the storyline "Guttenberg". His father, Edmund Dorrance (better known as King Snake), had been a revolutionary who had escaped the court system of Santa Prisca, an island country in the Caribbean.
Bane's true objective was to kill Batman to achieve his own sense of peace, and he believed that the Dark Knight was a dark figment of his imagination as he rotted away in his Santa Prisca prison cell, and then to conquer Gotham City and forge his own criminal empire.
