The overall plot of a demonic beldam disguising herself as the victim's mother in order to steal their souls and eat their lives is quite disturbing. One of the later plot points of the movie involves Coraline searching for the eyes of three ghost children whose lives were consumed by the Other Mother.
The Other Mother is no different. She changes her form to impersonate a child's mother and even has a similar voice to them. The fact that she uses this power to lure helpless children into her world by giving them attention and creating essentially a fantasy world for them is also terrifying.
