He made a grave mistake by wearing the ring, allowing Voldemort's curse to injure him. The Dark Lord's evil magic caused the tissue in Dumbledore's right hand to die and turn black, and that curse would only continue to spread throughout his body over time.
Hoping to revive his dead family members (particularly his sister Ariana Dumbledore), he disregarded the ring's status as a Horcrux and put it on. This enacted the ring's deadly curse, and it began to quickly spread through Dumbledore's body, starting with the hand on which he had put the ring.

Why does Dumbledore let himself be killed?
Dumbledore was dying of a curse set by Voldemort, and only had a few weeks to live. If he died of the curse, that meant Voldemort had killed him and would get the mastery of the Elder Wand. If he killed himself, there was a possibility the Wand would still interpret that as Voldemort's victory.

The standard purpose of Voldemort's Horcruxes was to tether his soul to the world of the living in case his body was destroyed.
He also knew Severus would do what he could to protect the children of Hogwarts. Snape knew he likely wasn't going to survive serving Voldemort, but the trust Dumbledore gave him went both ways. Dumbledore trusted that Harry Potter could defeat the Dark Lord, and thus Snape did what he could to help him.
When he and Gellert Grindelwald made plans to subjugate Muggles and take power in the Wizarding world, Albus planned to bring Ariana with them, but Aberforth pointed out that she was in no state to go. Voldemort seduced Snape to his cause and Snape did betray Lily and James to him when he told Voldemort a part of the prophecy connecting him and Harry. It is for this reason that he went to kill the Potters, and Snape never forgave himself for that.
Snape's death is one of the most tragic moments in the Harry Potter franchise, and it stands out because of how it differs from other character deaths. Voldemort chose to kill Snape by ordering his loyal snake, Nagini, to attack him instead of using one of the Unforgivable Curses.
