An Easter egg in the fifth film, 2022's Scream, revealed that Kirby did survive. A call from Panettiere to the franchise's current creative team (known as Radio Silence) was enough to clinch her reappearance for Scream VI, which finds Kirby as an FBI agent who comes to New York City following another Ghostface attack.
Kirby appears again in Scream VI, now an FBI special agent and living in Atlanta. She works alongside Detective Bailey to investigate the latest attacks made by the Ghostface killer, acknowledging her previous attack by Charlie Walker in 2011.
Campbell, who had played Sidney Prescott in every Scream film to date, announced in June 2021 she had quit the sixth instalment as she wasn't getting paid what she thought she deserved. “Sadly, I won't be making the next Scream film,” Campbell said in a statement to Variety.
Though the seventh film is still in the works, the franchise has hit a bump in the road as it has been reported that several cast members will no longer return for the sequel.

While Scream 6 ended with both Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) surviving, one of the two legacy characters is apt to die in the next Ghostface massacre of Scream 7.
Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), the fan-favorite final girl of Scream 4, makes a lot of sense to be one of the Ghostface killers in Scream 6. Kirby was stabbed in Scream 4, and it wasn't clear whether she survived. Then, she showed up in a blink-and-you'll-miss Easter egg in 2022's Scream.
Before Scream 7 went through a whole creative reset, Billy was expected to return in Scream 7 as there are many unanswered questions about Sam and her link to Billy.
