IndieWire's The Playlist reports the movie will go by the name of "Magic Mike XXL," because no good male-stripper sequel can be called something stodgy like "Magic Mike 2." Greg Jacobs will helm the follow-up.
The subject and the lead actor involved — Channing Tatum — have women worldwide drooling all over themselves and pushing each other in line to see who can get to the best seat the fastest. And there I sit mid-movie, pondering the meaning of XXL. In clothing terms, XXL is extra, extra large.
Magic Mike XXL takes place three years after the end of Magic Mike. While Mike has finally realized his dream of owning his own furniture business, he and Brooke have broken up, and his personal life is in shambles.

While Magic Mike XXL might be the most fun of the series, the original film still reigns supreme as a surprisingly deep character drama about the lifestyle of the male entertainer business.
The screenplay is in part inspired by Channing Tatum's experiences as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida, when he was 18 years old. Tatum said that he wanted to capture the atmosphere and energy of his past as a male stripper, but that the film is fictional, which allowed them to create their own scenarios.
During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Wednesday the Magic Mike star revealed that he was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to dancing. Tatum recalled of how he was taught to dance by a grandmother at a friend's 15th birthday party when he was a teenager, "It was survival”.

Magic Mike, set in Tampa, FL, uses a bright warm yellow for the outdoor, daytime scenes. By contrast, nighttime and strip club scenes are darker and neutral-to-purple. O Brother, Where Art Thou? has an extreme yellow filter throughout that makes what were green fields look yellow.
The Magic Mike trilogy is about the economics of female desire, actually. In the first film, released in 2012, this is literal: We meet a group of male strippers working multiple jobs in the busted American capitalist system, men whose bills are paid by this notoriously finicky thing of “what women want.”
The production initially courted Thandiwe Newton to join Magic Mike 3's cast and be the female lead. Newton was meant to play Maxandre before she exited the project. Salma Hayek replaced Thandiwe Newton after the Westworld star left the production to deal with a private family matter.
