In her original stories, and up until the 1980s, Diana's main weakness was being bound by a man. If captured and bound by a man, Wonder Woman couldn't access her powers. If a woman tied her up, however, Diana remained as strong as ever.

The only in universe explanation for this is that she didn't really feel the need to fly in either movie. Why do DC comics have so much inconsistency over whether Wonder Woman can fly or not? The original version of Wonder Woman could not fly. That's why she had the (ridiculous by today's standards) Invisible Jet.
