The utter joy of Frozen is that it behaves like a classic fairytale but then bends all the rules. One of the key reasons why it's not just another animated Disney princess movie franchise is the strength of its writing, which carried consistently and powerfully through from the first movie to the sequel.
It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and “Let It Go” won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The film contained all the elements of a traditional Disney plot—princesses and ball gowns, a handsome prince, a wisecracking sidekick, and a stream of upbeat songs.
Firstly, the film completely changes the perspective of Andersen's source material. While the Snow Queen is traditionally the villain of the piece, due to her dangerous powers, in Frozen, Elsa is the sympathetic hero, so afraid to hurt others that she isolates herself from the world.
Beyond that, Elsa is a very relatable person. While young children might not be able to appreciate the complex past that molded her character, they can understand that Elsa is overall misunderstood, and this makes her a super interesting character. Her development in Frozen II is even cooler.
