Considering many in district 12 can't afford jewellery, she stands out during a ceremony that's televised to all citizens.
Prim is randomly selected as the girl tribute that is supposed to fight in the Hunger Games. However, when her name is called, Katniss volunteers as tribute in her place, saving her sister's life. Before Prim is selected, we only see a glimpse into her life through the eyes of her sister.

The families of victors can be used as leverage to force them to bend to the Capitol's will. Katniss also mentioned that the children of victors are reaped to participate in the Hunger Games suspiciously often.
Similarly, past victors of the Hunger Games, even if they are still of reaping age, are exempt from further reapings. Once of age at twelve years old, a potential tribute's name was entered into the reaping one time.

In the arena, Maysilee saves Haymitch at one point, and after the two team up, they travel all the way to the arena's edge. Maysilee decides to go off on her own. Haymitch stays and ultimately discovers that a force field around the edge of the arena propels anything thrown at it back into the arena.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.
