The film follows on from After Ever Happy, which sees Tessa (Josephine Langford) and Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) break up after a story he wrote about their relationship gets published and becomes a bestseller.
At the end of After Ever Happy after Tessa discovers that Hardin has been writing a book based on their relationship, she ends their relationship, seemingly for good. We see later that Hardin pressed ahead with publishing the book which became a bestseller. In the final scene, we see Tessa sneak into his book signing.
Hardin comes to visit every weekend even though he is now a famous author of the book he wrote about their relationship. At Landon's wedding Hardin proposes and he and Tessa run off to Vegas to get married. After a miscarriage, they have a daughter and a son.
