Official Disney Princess List. Originally, there were eight official Disney princesses included in the line-up: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan. Today, there are twelve princesses in total, eleven from Walt Disney Animation Studios, and one from Pixar.
The Disney Princesses are a magical group, but ultimately they boil down to a merchandise and film franchise from a business perspective. Frozen is its own merchandise and film franchise. Basically, Anna and Elsa aren't princesses because they're plenty profitable on their own!
Moana strays away from the typical story of a Disney princess film. She does not have to be saved by a man, and end up with her “Prince Charming.” Moana is independent from the beginning, a strong leader, resilient, and she is not white!
If you haven't seen Frozen 2, you may be wondering, wait– how come Anna isn't a princess? Well, after Elsa was crowned as queen of Arendelle, she then resigned to become the fifth spirit, and Anna took her place. This made Anna the queen, and you simply can't be a queen and a princess all at once!
1. Mulan. Ah, the perfect epitome of women empowerment - Fa Mulan. This warrior Disney "princess" is fearless and badass, displaying her strength and wit despite her mother's constant reminder to act like a refined woman.
In Disney's nearly 100-year history, there has been only one Black Disney princess — Princess Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog,” a 2009 animated feature starring Anika Noni Rose. The singer Brandy starred in a 1997 made-for-TV film version of “Cinderella,” a remake of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.
Snow White is only 14 years old, making her the youngest. Jasmine, who is supposed to be 15, is the second youngest. Cinderella and Tiana are the oldest, both 19 years old.
There are currently only five non-Caucasian Disney Princesses: Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana and Moana. Jasmine is Arabian. Pocahontas is Native American. Mulan is Chinese.
On December 20, Netflix removed Moana to make room for a new lineup of films for Christmas and New Year's Eve. While Moana is no longer available on Netflix, you are still able to enjoy the movie over the holidays. Amazon Prime offers Moana for purchase, and iTunes offers both a rental and a purchase option.
In many European countries, the name of the titular character, Moana, was changed to Vaiana due to a trademark conflict. The film was released in those countries to bear the alternative name in the title.
In Esmeralda's case, the reason was that the sales of The Hunchback of Notre Dame products were not going as Disney had hoped, and the character was not as popular with the audience. Tinker Bell's situation was quite different, because she was removed so that she could star in her own franchise known as Disney Fairies.
While it is not confirmed to be the official reason, Tinker Bell's disappearance still coincides with the politically-correctness-driven “Story Matters” division's ruling. Tinker Bell was “marked for caution” because she is “body-conscious” and “jealous of Peter Pan's attention.”
However, Tinker Bell was removed so she could lead her own franchise as a Disney fairy, and through that, she got to star in a couple of movies. Other characters were considered to be part of the Disney Princesses franchise but didn't make it, as were Enchanted's Giselle, Tarzan's Jane, and Frozen's Anna and Elsa.
