He is notably stronger than Wonder Woman, and was able to send her flying vast distances with his incredibly mighty blows. When in his natural and massive form, Ares' superhuman strength was far superior to the likes of the strongest New Gods.
Unfortunately, Ares is simply too dangerous to be kept alive. After he once again attacks Themyscira, Diana realizes he is too great a manipulator. She decides to remove this threat from Earth. Resolute, she uses a battle axe to split Ares' helmet — and head — in two.
Wonder Woman's strength and powers are impressive, but she has been defeated by surprising opponents. Batwoman managed to beat Wonder Woman and nearly kill her using her combat skills and the lasso of truth. Swamp Thing easily defeated Wonder Woman without even needing to attack her, leaving her helpless.
While there's little doubt that Superman would end up winning a fight against Ares, it would take a whole lot more effort than the Last Son of Krypton is used to exerting on an average day. And with one wrong step, that sure to be Superman win could become a come from behind victory for Ares.

Can Ares beat Thanos?
Although he has been sent back to the underworld time and time again, Ares is never truly killed and can ultimately never be defeated. Thanos may be quicker than the Greek God, but he is in no way as powerful.
While Ares was focusing his powers to heal his grievous wounds, with the last of his divine powers, Zeus created the protected island paradise Themyscira for the Amazons to live, hidden from the God of War, thus causing Ares to now be unopposed in his quest to destroy humanity but also left much weaker and smaller ...
Ares loses because he believes that being the God of War means he always wins. If he can lose to someone who isn't on his level powers-wise like Wonder Woman, he'd have even less of a chance against Thor, who can match him in godly might and experience. Thor would beat him silly, making a mockery of Ares.
Although he was the God of War, he was not the strongest of the Gods. Athena defeated him on several occasions, and also Hercules bested him. In classical art, Ares is shown to be a fully dressed warrior, wearing a helmet, armour, and carrying shield and spear.
Even with her fighting knowledge, Hulk's raw power alone is likely far too much for her to handle. Furthermore, Hulk only grows stronger as his rage increases. In a prolonged fight with Wonder Woman, he is very likely to grow ever stronger, eventually being able to completely overpower her.
Not only did Wonder Woman pop her father Zeus' head off with her Lasso of Truth; she also went after all the other gods too. According to the Robin King, she supposedly killed them all, and also took all of their powers.
She has no convenient weakness. She used to be rendered powerless if she was bound or shackled by a man, but that's been phased out. She would also go mad when her bracelets were removed. Not treated consistently either.
In Greek mythology, nobody could kill Ares because he was immortal. However, in various computer games and comics, he was killed by various characters, including Wonder Woman. However, Ares was humiliated and beaten quite a few times, especially when he had an adulterous affair with the goddess Aphrodite.
Darkseid suffered a definitive defeat in the History Lesson and he was fortunate to escape with his life because Ares came incredibly close to killing him. But while the Greek God of War nearly struck the killing blow on Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips was already substantially weakened by Ares' allies.
Athena defeated Ares several times. During the Trojan War, she attacked him with a boulder. Athena also helped Heracles (Hercules in Latin) defeat Ares through a non-fatal wound.
Ares was Zeus' least favorite son, something which caused mass resentment in Ares and caused him to act out to get his father's attention, which itself was what Zeus disliked about him.
Ares, alongside Raven Keeper is the one of the two God of War villains to be Pure Evil. This version of Ares is, alongside Wrath of the Titans version, one of the two versions of Ares to be Pure Evil.
Unlike the other gods, Ares is particularly impulsive and sanguine and knowing the human soul, he decided to actively help Theseus and his friends in an ambush right away. However, his intervention will lead him to death at the hands of Zeus himself.
This would depend on which versions we are talking about. Zeus is a sky-father and is the equal of Odin, Thor's own father. And Odin would beat the jeebus out of Thor in a heartbeat. So naturally, Zeus would win the battle.
The distraught Bruce puts the helmet on and immediately becomes a merciless engine of destruction, decapitating Ares before moving on to kill the rest of the godly pantheons.
Ares embarrassed Zeus and Hera on multiple occasions, such as in his affair with Aphrodite, his excessive violence, and his support of the Trojans in the Trojan War, which betrayed a promise he made to his mother. Not everyone hated Ares though, the militaristic Spartans and Thracians worshipped him.
