General Skywalker made the decision to divide the 501st to respond to both threats, promoting Captain Rex to serve as the Clone Commander of a new division, the 332nd Division. Appo remained in the previous force of the 501st, returning with that part of the legion to Coruscant.
On Appo's page it says "At some point between the Battle of Umbara and the Battle of Coruscant, Appo was promoted to the military rank of Clone Commander,[12] but Rex—despite only being a captain—held more authority, retaining his position as leader of the 501st as a whole.
Before they could kill him, Appo and Bow arrived and opened fire on the Jedi. After the clones executed the last of them, Appo informed Vader that the Emperor sought his presence. Following he and his fellow men saving Lord Vader's life, he lead the 501st on Kashyyk only to be decapitated by Jedi Master Roan Shryne.
In Canon, Captain Rex removed his inhibitor chip, preventing him from being brainwashed into following Order 66. He fought in the Siege of Mandalore, and helped Ahsoka Tano escape when his men turned on them. Currently, he is still alive and fighting alongside the Rebels.
For most of the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion was led by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano, and Clone Captain Rex, who served as their first in command.
The clone trooper battalion, was put under the leadership of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker with clone captain Rex, while Rex was succeeded by Appo at the end of the war. The 501st was present from the beginning of the Clone Wars until Legacy Era.
Rex was added to the main cast of Star Wars Rebels television series, set fifteen years after The Clone Wars, in the second season. Now seemingly a much older man due to accelerated aging, Rex lives with fellow clone troopers Commander Wolffe and Captain Gregor.
The adult clones Obi-Wan saw on Kamino were only about a decade old. That, unfortunately, makes a Rex cameo in Ahsoka difficult. By this point in the Star Wars timeline, Rex would be well into his 80s. Throw in advanced aging, and it's unlikely Rex — or any other clone — would still be alive to make an appearance.
Whether or not he was the rebel commando named Nik Sant is the subject of debate: However, in the New Canon Rex did serve with Luke, Han and Leia at least once.
A new ship arrived next to the stormtroopers, though, with Roan Shryne on board. Shryne used the Force to pull one of the fallen Jedi's lightsabers to him, and with it he decapitated Appo.

Ahsoka outranked him because she was a Jedi, however Rex said, "In my book, experience outranks everything". Ahsoka then replied, "Well, if experience outranks everything, I guess I'd better start getting some!" The two became friends and Ahsoka got more experience, eventually outranking the captain!
A short time after the execution of Order 66, Palpatine would announce that he was reorganizing the Republic into the Galactic Empire, which he would rule as Emperor. Now serving the Empire, the members of the 501st took the designation of stormtrooper, as well as new armor, weapons, and ships.
The “Ahsoka” series is expected to be set around the same time as “The Mandalorian” – almost eight years after the events of “Return of the Jedi,” by which time the Rex character will be a chronological age of 44 and a biological age/appearance of a man well into his 80s (Morrison is 62).
Rex is actually 31 years old, though his biological state is likely closer to at least sixty years, due to the accelerated aging that was genetically installed in all Clone Troopers. Because of their accelerating aging, Clones age twice as faster than regular humans.
This indicates that Rex hasn't interacted with Obi-Wan since the Clone Wars, making an appearance by Rex in Obi-Wan Kenobi impossible without contradicting Rebels.
Rex and Ahsoka are very close friends, having met each other at the battle of Christophsis after she was assigned as Anakin's apprentice. He took an immediate liking towards her and later congratulated her when she helped Anakin destroy the Separatists' shield generator.
Star Wars Has Confirmed Captain Rex Was At The Battle Of Endor. Captain Rex was a major character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but Star Wars Rebels brought him into the Age of the Empire. At the beginning of season 2, Ahsoka and the crew of the Ghost recruited the iconic clone trooper to their cause.
Captain Rex was able to resist executing Order 66 because he was able to remove his inhibitor chip. In the Star Wars universe, the inhibitor chips were implanted in the brains of all clone troopers to ensure their loyalty to the Galactic Republic.
Rex's helmet, which he wore in the latter half of the war, was a modified combination. of both Phase 1 and Phase 2 clone armor, which we explained in a recent video. As other clones transitioned to standard Phase 2 gear, Rex welded his new and old issued armor. into his own hybrid.
While listening to Kanan retell the events of Order 66 to Ezra, Rex reveals to the two that he and his fellow retired soldiers removed their control chips prior to the killings of the Jedi. He was never involved in the betrayal that Kanan holds against him.
The Clone Wars co-creator Dave Filoni confirmed in a 2011 interview with IGN that the tally marks represented kills. "[Rex is], like, this veteran now," he said, "and he's got little kill marks all over his armor." He added, "Rex doesn't believe that the new armor is really that good.
