Norman's older brother, Dylan, was an outsider in his own family due to the nature of Norma and Norman's relationship as well as the premise under which Dylan was conceived. (He was the son of Norma and Norma's brother, who raped her as a teenager.)
In this continuity, Norma has another son, Dylan Massett (Max Thieriot), who was conceived when she was raped as a teenager by her older brother, Caleb Calhoun (Kenny Johnson).
Instead, Dylan attempted to bring Norman in himself. Unfortunately, the only thing Norman wanted in the end was to be reunited with his mother, even if it meant he had to die. So in a twisted suicide attempt, Norman rushed at a gun-wielding Dylan with a knife, forcing his brother to shoot and kill him.
Norman sets Caleb free, but "Mother" chases him into the road, where a distracted Chick accidentally hits him with his car. Caleb dies from the accident and Chick cremates the body.
When Norma tried to explain that Caleb raped her repeatedly as a child, Dylan flew off the handle and called Norma a liar, which led to a brawl between Dylan and his half-brother Norman (Freddie Highmore). As the fight escalated, Norma was forced to drop a major bombshell: Caleb is Dylan's father!
Both the 1959 novel, and its 1960 film adaptation explain that Norman suffered severe emotional abuse as a child at the hands of his mother, Norma, who preached to him that sexual intercourse was sinful and that all women (except herself) were whores.
At the age of 17, Norma gave birth to Dylan, later discovered to have been fathered via an incestuous relationship with her brother Caleb. Unlike her relationship with Norman, he and Norma have failed to bond over the years since he blamed her for cheating on his legal father John Massett.
She would sexually arouse her son Norman as a child and then physically punish him for getting aroused. She hypocritically says to Norman that all girls except herself are lustful sinners who want nothing but to have sex with him, despite her having a pedophilic and incestuous desire for him.

In one case, Sheriff Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell) has decided to marry Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga), just so her son Norman (Freddie Highmore) can get the medical help he so clearly needs.
When he was nineteen, his mother took a lover, Joe Considine. After Norman walked in on the couple having sex and Considine made plans to marry Norma, Norman became jealous.

Does the Bates Motel House really exist? In 'real-life', no. The original 1960 set of the house and hotel is located in Universal Studios. A replica of the hotel was been built in Aldergrove, British Columbia for the TV series, which is set in Oregon.
At about this time, a series of brutal murders occur that bear a similarity to the ones Norman committed years before. In the film's final scene, Mrs. Spool comes to visit Norman and reveals to him that she is his real mother. She tells him that she had him when she was very young and out of wedlock.
One day, when he was doing things to her she heard her father come home and she jumped up so quickly that she hit an iron and it fell on her leg, which is where that scar comes from.
Background. Caleb was born in 1970 and Norma was born four years later. Growing up in an abusive household, they formed a close bond with one another which eventually led to an incestuous relationship, resulting in the birth of their son Dylan Massett in 1991 when Norma was 17 years old.
Dylan drove Joey to shoot himself in the head (suicide) & then was accidentally shot in the head & killed by Noah's older sister; Rebecca, after he attempted to take the gun away from her. His body was then mauled by insects & animals.
