Secretly, without Sauron's knowledge, Celebrimbor also forged three Rings for the Elves, the greatest and fairest of the Rings of Power. The three Rings were thus free of Sauron's corrupting influence. At the same time, Sauron secretly forged a ring: the One Ring which would enable him to rule Middle-earth.
Sauron (Sala Baker) directly made only one of the 20 rings, the famed "one ring to rule them all," although he assisted in the creation of the nine rings for mortal men and the seven rings for the dwarves. The three rings for the elven-kings were forged alone by Celebrimbor, with knowledge obtained from Sauron.
Purpose. The One Ring was forged by the Dark Lord Sauron during the Second Age to gain dominion over the free peoples of Middle-earth. In disguise as Annatar, or "Lord of Gifts", he aided the Elven smiths of Eregion and their leader Celebrimbor in the making of the Rings of Power.
So, in one of the last cutscenes you see Celebrimbor actually helping Sauron to forge the One Ring. Celebrimbor escapes and later we see him in what I assume The War of the Elves and Sauron, and the ring decieves Celebrimbor and fall on Sauron's finger.
It is at this point Celebrimbor becomes a Wraith, destined to be so until such a time when he can once again battle Sauron. Like Sauron himself, Celebrimbor has his fate bound to that of the Ring.

Was Celebrimbor killed by Sauron?
Celebrimbor is slain personally by Sauron, but Sauron does not get the Three Rings. His wrath now blazes. Elrond with all (the few) refugees from Eregion he can gather fight a vanguard action and draw away N.W. He founds a stronghold in Imladris.
Having been corrupted by the One Ring long ago, Celebrimbor now exists as an undead wraith, determined to not only get his revenge on Sauron but also to replace Sauron as a would-be ruler of Middle-earth. This is reflected in how he is the "Bright Lord" to Sauron's "Dark Lord".
In Telerin High-Elf Celebrimbor Version he is the follower of Galadriel's boyfriend/husband Celeborn. One of the three Teleri who accompanied Celeborn to Exile when he left Aman to follow Galadriel into Middle-earth.
She said all this to Celebrimbor, who decided to make her the Elessar so she could have everything she had wished. When he gave it to her, he told her it was because of his love for her, even though she had chosen Celeborn to marry.
He is, after all, from a younger generation than Galadriel herself, she being his second cousin once removed, and while one can play around with his unknown birthdate (he might conceivably be older than Galadriel if you push Curufin back in time and Finarfin forward), it is a stretch to make him substantially older.
The Second Age ended, and Isildur became High King of both Arnor and Gondor. Isildur took up the hilt-shard of Narsil, Elendil's sword, and cut the One Ring from the hand of Sauron.
Finally Sauron came out to fight Elendil and Gil-galad face to face. When Elendil fell, his sword Narsil broke beneath him. Isildur took up the hilt-shard of Narsil and cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand, vanquishing Sauron.
With Sauron's help, they learnt to forge Rings of Power, creating the Seven and the Nine. While Celebrimbor created a set of Three on his own, Sauron left for Mordor and forged the One Ring, a master ring to control all the others, in the fires of Mount Doom.
The Three Rings were magical artefacts, three of the Rings of Power. They were forged by Celebrimbor and granted the power to preserve the beauty of things by stopping change and warding off the decay of time and postponing the weariness of the world.
Celebrimbor was the son of Curufin, one of the seven sons of Feanor, and his wife Nerdanel, daughter of Mahtan the Smith.It was said that Celebrimbor felt an unrequited love for Galadriel, however in Shadows of Mordor he is shown as having unnamed wife and daughter, both of whom having been tortured and eventually ...
Of course, Sauron-in-disguise had been manipulating the elves to make something that he would later be able to control with the One Ring (though he hadn't made it yet). Thankfully, Galadriel put the pieces together before his deception went too far— but she said nothing, and the Three Rings were made.
Captured by Sauron, the elf was then tortured as punishment, such as witnessing his family tortured and killed in front of him, before finally being beaten to death with his own Mithril hammer by Sauron.
Galadriel was one of the Ñoldor who came to Middle-earth wishing to see the lands and rule a realm of her own. She came with the second host of Elves from Aman with Fingolfin and Finrod. In Doriath, she and Celeborn fell in love and married.
Arwen. Galadriel's granddaughter and the daughter of Celebrían and Elrond. After the War of the Ring, Arwen marries Aragorn II Elessar and becomes Queen of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor. Like other Half-Elves, Arwen has the birthright to choose either immortality among the Elves or mortality among Men.
Like Elrond, some of Galadriel's powers stemmed from the Ring of Power that she held in her possession. Nenya, the ring of water, had the powers of preservation and concealment from evil, which Galadriel used to create Lothlórien and keep it safe from outside influences.
Galadriel is Elrond's mother-in-law, and Arwen's grandmother; as is Celeborn, Galadriel's husband. Arwen's mother, was Elrond's wife, and Galadriel's daughter, Celebrian; named for her silver hair, that she apparently got from her father, Celeborn.
Actually Sauron was a originally a very gifted craftsman of Aule, and step-brother to Saruman. However Morgoth later corrupted him with promises of power, teaching him of evil magic to dominate and rule over others; ultimately making him his lieutenant.
The Sindar Elves in Beleriand gave Mairon the name Gorthaur, meaning "dread abomination," while others called him Sauron, meaning "the abhorred" or "the abominable," a play on his original name.
Another possible reason for Celebrimbor to be sommoned is that he was the only one powerful enough to be Sauron's equal, since he also used the One Ring. Sauron would then want Celebrimbor to either side with him or be destroyed.
