Ok so the movie Smile is based around a curse/entity that feeds and spreads through trauma. The main character Rose gets the Trauma both from her mother's death when she is young and also seeing her patient who had the Trauma die violently.
Her mental illness is to be avoided or sidelined. Her sister, Holly (Gillian Zinser), turns her away, confessing she's spent decades trying to move on from their traumatic childhood (their mother committed suicide). Rose's erratic behavior reminds her of their mother's mental illness.
While Rose is indeed responsible for her mother's death, she was only ten years old at the time and was constantly scared of her mother's erratic behavior. Not only is Rose unable to defeat the demon in Smile's ending but, in a truly vicious twist, the entity waits until Joel arrives before possessing and killing her. This means that it will be able to live on in him since the curse needs a witness to pass itself on.

It could be theorized that due to its difference in behavior, Smile's entity is a collector of souls, quickly consuming its victims and moving to the next, only gaining more strength with each one. A moment between Rose and the entity in Smile supports this theory, as it tells Rose that she will stay with it forever.

Laura Hasn't Slept is a 2020 American short horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Parker Finn. The film stars Caitlin Stasey and Lew Temple. It would later serve as inspiration for Finn's feature-length horror film Smile (2022); a continuation in which Stasey briefly reprised her role.
Two possibilities assert themselves at this juncture: this has all been a dream and Laura is waking up to her "real life" and the trauma she has tried to escape through dreaming--or there is a version of events where Laura survived to hear her mother calling that morning.
