Just like in the original fairy tale, he plucks a rose and is punished as a result, rather than for trespassing in the castle. Like in the original film and story, Belle comes to his rescue and convinces the Beast to free Maurice in exchange for taking his life sentence upon herself.
Belle begs the Beast to let her father go. When he does not relent, she offers to become the Beast's prisoner in exchange for her father's freedom. The Beast accepts her offer and has Maurice escorted out before Belle can say goodbye.

How was the beast abusive to Belle?
It's ok to get angry—it's an emotion we all experience—but when a person lashes out physically or verbally because of their anger that is abusive behavior. In the Beast's case, he tries to intimidate Belle into submission by threatening to withhold food.
Gaston was Belle's greatest enemy. He wanted to marry her by any means necessary just because she was the most beautiful girl he laid eyes on. However, Belle strongly disliked Gaston for his snobbish, arrogant, and narcissistic personality and was the only girl in the village to not be infatuated with Gaston.
She was a victim of the plague (The "Black Death") in Paris when Belle was only an infant. Before Belle's mother died, she told Maurice to get himself and their daughter away from the plague to safety.

In the musical version, when the Beast discovers Belle with the rose, he scares her out of the room. But then he follows her, furious but trying to keep her from running away.
