"What does this monster have to mourn?" The Sacrifice of Gamora was the ultimate step that was required in order for Thanos to obtain the Soul Stone. When Red Skull informed Thanos that he must sacrifice someoned that he loved to obtain the Soul Stone, Thanos tearfully threw Gamora off a cliff, killing her.
This lends credence to the idea that Thanos was able to see Gamora immediately following the snap in Infinity War because he was still feeling grief over her loss despite the fact that he was the one to kill her.
Since Gamora was most regularly successful in advancing his ideals and vision for the universe going forward, he favored her, equating her successes with love.
When Gamora finally does confront Thanos, she believes for a moment that she's killed him and breaks down, crying. An orange light passes over her--but it's fleeting. Whatever love Gamora has for Thanos is all but smothered by darkness.
Thanos never cared much for Nebula, even going so far as to say in Guardians of the Galaxy that Gamora was his favorite. That could be because, to Thanos, Nebula was nothing more than a means to spare Gamora while still obtaining the Soul Stone.

Did Thanos regret sacrificing Gamora?
However, Red Skull saw his true intentions, informing Gamora that Thanos was, in fact, weeping for Gamora, as he truly loved her as a daughter, and was heartbroken that he had to sacrifice her to get the Soul Stone. Disbelieving, Gamora could not comprehend that Thanos ever showed genuine love for her.
Thanos eventually realizes that all the trouble he went for in the snap: Killing Gamora, Killing Asgard's population, and ruining lives, have been for nothing. Thanos commits to finding a solution to reverse the snap. He starts to repair the gauntlet and confronts the Avengers.
Because she does not have a history with the Guardians, she does not reunite with them at the end of Endgame. Instead, she starts her own journey while Peter Quill is left mourning his dead girlfriend despite the existence of another version of Gamora in his universe.
Taking her in as his adoptive daughter, Thanos would go on to turn her into a living weapon with cybernetic enhancements. As she grew up, Thanos would force Gamora and her adoptive sister Nebula to fight one another, but referred to Gamora—who won every fight—as his favorite daughter.
While Thanos raised them as sisters, he repeatedly made them fight each other to test their strength. Every time they sparred, Gamora would win, and Thanos would "upgrade" one of Nebula's body parts, claiming that he was attempting to make Nebula Gamora's equal, so she could win next time.

On Earth, the Snap led to a five-year period in which the world fell into societal collapse and many countries abandoned their national borders. In 2023, the victims of the Snap were resurrected by the Avengers, after they went back in time to alternate timelines to acquire their own set of Infinity Stones.
Tony made the decision consciously to spare her. The only things he knows of Gamora are that she is Nebula's sister, and that she was killed the first time Thanos retrieved the Stones.
And OOOPS SURPRISE Thanos has to sacrifice "what he loves most" in order to get the stone. His tears imply that he loves Gamora, but in one of my favorite movie moments of all time, Gamora spits back at him, "This isn't love."
As revealed in Infinity War, Gamora has known the Soul Stone's location for a very long time. Years ago, long before 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy takes place, Thanos sent her on a mission to find the Soul Stone and report back.
A quick, comedic scene in Vol. 3's Orgocorp heist teases some potential romance between Peter Quill and Nebula, but James Gunn claims that it was never going to become anything more (per The New York Times).
That version of Gamora really did die when Thanos sacrificed her and the Gamora in Guardians 3 is the alternate-timeline Gamora. It's why she acts differently to the Gamora we knew, as she's had different life experiences.
3, Peter Quill and Gamora do not end up in a relationship with each other. Gamora says she bets the other Gamora and Peter Quill were great together, and he agrees. Gamora goes back to her life with the Ravagers, who are her family, with a whole new understanding of what it means to be a galactic hero.
Another prevalent argument is that the God of Thunder was simply too exhausted at that point, having used all of his energy fighting Hela in Thor: Ragnarok.
