Although I'm not sure if I'd say it's good, Marvel Studios' Echo was a huge surprise! I really disliked the character of Maya when she appeared in Marvel Studios' Hawkeye back in 2021, so when it was announced she'd get her own spinoff series, I was very much *not* excited. But, it surpassed my expectations!
All told, Echo is fine. I enjoyed the first three episodes well enough, even if it's a bit slow for a show that's only five episodes long. All five episodes drop tonight, which also feels like a bad decision, not giving the series enough time to build up any hype.
When assessing the share of viewership time across all Disney+ shows this year, Echo has 11.8% of the streamer's overall viewing hours, well behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians at 23.3%. The next-closest original series to Echo is the recently released X-Men '97 Season 1 at 6.8%.
The protagonist's disabilities are easily one of the most significant details of the series. Marvel makes sure to provide a proper representation of the life of a deaf and amputated individual. Viewers can appreciate how naturally Lopez presents her impairments, as Marvel is careful to not blow them out of proportion.
Article Breakdown: Maya Lopez, aka Echo, is an anti-hero. She cannot be considered a classical superhero due to her extreme anger and bloodlust. Superheros aren't conventionally associated with such an extreme desire for vengeance.
It's a disjointed series that doesn't make a case for why it exists, and I am not surprised to see it rated on the low side of much better MCU offerings, however much the current MCU, including its Disney Plus push, may be struggling on the whole. A second season for Echo is uncertain, but Marvel Studios is open to having Alaqua Cox return in future MCU projects. Echo's role in the MCU's street-level stories creates opportunities for her to reappear, especially in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.
