Big Bird is a Muppet character designed by Jim Henson and built by Kermit Love for the children's television show Sesame Street. An eight-foot two-inch (249 cm) tall bright yellow anthropomorphic bird, he can roller skate, ice skate, dance, swim, sing, write poetry, draw, and ride a unicycle.
Created by Jim Henson in 1955, they are the focus of a media franchise that encompasses television, film, music, and other media associated with the characters. Originally owned by the Jim Henson Company for nearly five decades, the franchise was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 2004.
Notably in 2004, Disney acquired The Muppets from The Jim Henson Company, consisting of much of The Muppets film and television library. However, the acquisition did not include Sesame Street. Sesame Street ownership still currently falls under the Sesame Workshop, formerly the Children's Television Workshop (CTW).

Why isn t Elmo a Muppet?
To be considered part of The Muppets, basically the character has to be a regular from the Muppet Show or one of the subsequent shows/movies that principally star 'The Muppets'. So obviously this would include the main cast like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo etc., the side characters like Crazy Harry and Marvin Suggs.
Why does Disney own the Muppets but not Sesame Street?
In the interim, EM.TV sold the rights to the Sesame Street Muppets to Sesame Workshop in early January 2001, following a December 2000 announcement. Henson sold The Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House properties to Disney in 2004, but retains the remainder of its program library and assets.
The Muppets Studio wouldn't exist, with its projects being fully owned and produced by Jim Henson Enterprises. Jim Henson Home Entertainment would still exist, although now as a sub-label of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.
The first Muppet characters appeared in Sam and Friends, a Washington, D.C.–based show which was broadcast from 1955 to 1961. Kermit the Frog was one of the show's regulars, and thus was one of Henson's first Muppet creations.

Henson's last known performance as Kermit was for an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show to promote the television special The Muppets at Walt Disney World. Henson died twelve days after that appearance. Following Henson's death, veteran Muppet performer Steve Whitmire was named Kermit's new performer.
