It's Dory, rendered an orphan by her short-term memory loss. From there, it only takes a few seconds to zoom from Dory's adolescence to the moment she's caught in a plastic six-pack ring and scooped up by a marine life institute.
Plot. Dory, the regal blue tang, gets separated from her parents, Jenny and Charlie, as a child. As she grows up, Dory attempts to search for them, but gradually forgets them due to her short-term memory loss. Later, she joins the clownfish Marlin, looking for Nemo.
Nemo. Dory has a motherly relationship with Nemo. When the two met, she was relieved to find someone with kindness, and offered to help him look for his father, although she didn't remember she was looking for him too.
They have just returned back to the reef when Dory begins to have flashbacks regarding how she lost her family. Through this sequence, we realize that Dory was actually born with memory lapse but chose to embrace her uniqueness and maximize each opportunity.
Then the actual flashback begins as she is in their coral home, crying to Charlie about how she's scared about what will happen to their daughter as she can't remember anything, and expresses her worries about when she'll be by herself as an adult. Charlie comforts her, both not knowing Dory has seen everything.
