Gimli is the son of Glóin who is introduced in The Hobbit as a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, also being one of his four third cousins. Thorin himself is a direct descendant of Durin I, even becoming the King of Durin's Folk in his lifetime.
Early life. Born in TA 2879, Gimli was the son of Glóin and a nephew of Óin, both former companions of Bilbo Baggins. He was a descendant of Durin the Deathless, father of the first house of the Dwarven people. Gimli was descended from, but was not a member of the royal line.
Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.

Did Thorin's bloodline end?
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
Though Gimli has no children, he is not the last Dwarf of Middle-earth. After the fall of Sauron, his people continued to thrive in the Lonely Mountain. Gimli made his home in Rohan, in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and many of his kinsfolk came with him.
In TA 2941, Gimli was prevented from traveling with his father on the Quest of Erebor because Thorin and Company thought he was too young, though Gimli, being in his sixties, considered himself ripe for adventure and was disappointed to be left behind.
Simply put, he was the only one available. There were only two dwarves at the council of Elrond, Gimli and his father Gloin. The Dwarves were fighting Sauron's forces constantly in their own campaign and couldn't spare many. Gloin was also much older now, it was absolutely his son's turn to go on a big journey.
Gimli didn't know about Moria's fate because there had been no communication between Erebor and Moria for 25 years, and the Dwarves were hopeful and did not want to accept failure until there was certain news.

In Aglarond, it is assumed, he lived on until he was old, and in Fo. A. 120 he sailed with Legolas his friend across Belegaer to Valinor, becoming the first and only Dwarf to do so.

He believed the stories told in Gondor that Galadriel's magic would harm them. He eventually agreed to go after Aragorn assured him the Elves would help them. In Lothlórien, Boromir was disturbed by what he felt was Galadriel's testing of his mind, and he was suspicious of her motives.
Description. The tomb was located within what had once been the Chamber of Mazarbul, or the Chamber of Records. The tomb was in the center of the room and housed the body of Gimli's fallen cousin, Balin, who had tried to reclaim Moria in TA 2989.
According to one theory (via Stack Exchange), Gimli did not know about the fall of Moria in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie due, effectively, to poor communication.
Is Gimli the only person who tried to destroy the Ring?
The scene is notably created for the film and while it appears to be a humorous example of Gimli's direct tactics and lack of patience, it is actually a definitive moment for his character, showcasing his indomitable willpower, as he's the only character to directly attempt to destroy the ring without hesitation.
He would not want to take the chance that the Ring might corrupt him. If it wouldn't, it wouldn't, but Gandalf doesn't want to risk it. The One Ring is definitely a corrupting force. And if Gandalf were to be corrupted, the people of Middle Earth would have no chance against Sauron.
Gimli calls Legolas “lad” because the elf is more youthful than him in appearance, if not in actual age. (Note: it is only an educated guess from readers that Legolas is at least 500 years old. Tolkien never specifies his age.)
Gimli was born in 2879. So he was 139 years by the time the Fellowship set out. Since the Council of Elrond takes place at the end of 3018 and the Fellowship sets out around the beginning of the next year. He would sail was at the age of 262 years alongside Legolas as an extremely elderly dwarf.
The origin(s) of orcs were explained two different ways (i.e., inconsistently) by Tolkien: the orcs were either East Elves (Avari) enslaved, tortured, and bred by Morgoth (as Melkor became known), or, "perhaps ... Avari [(a race of elves)] ... [turned] evil and savage in the wild", both according to The Silmarillion.
There's only one real moment in The Fellowship of the Ring that touches upon Gimli's past: when he enters the Mines of Moria in hopes of seeing his cousin, Balin, who was once Lord of Moria.
