Katniss and Gale and other mining families are described as having “straight black hair, olive skin; we even have the same gray eyes.” These traits are typical of the Melungeon, a marginalized mixed-race Appalachian community; recent DNA evidence reveals they were descended from escaped African-American slaves.
Despite the apparent insignificance of race, the film centers whiteness. For example, in the book, Katniss is described as having olive skin, gray eyes, and black hair, so the actor cast to play her could be mixed race, Latina, or Middle Eastern (to name a few possibilities).
"They (Katniss, Peeta and Gale) were not particularly intended to be biracial. It is a time period where hundreds of years have passed from now. There's been a lot of ethnic mixing.
She strongly resembled her dad's appearance, and her sister prim was the exact opposite, resembling her mother. Katniss was supposed to represent a native. individual ritual, but that was not shown in the movie. They got her hair color right, but not her culture.
Katniss, in the books, is olive-skinned with dark black hair, has the same skin tone as a black character (who resembles another black character, whose skin is “satiny brown”), and spends a while describing the community dynamics, power imbalance, and discrimination she faces as a Seam woman in contrast to her white ...
At times she's convinced that he's scheming, deceiving her and the others; at other times, she thinks that he might be acting out of kindness, which is more dangerous to her since she knows she won't be able to kill a kind Peeta Mellark. The image of the dandelion returns.
How Katniss Deals with Her PTSD. It's no surprise that Katniss becomes traumatized—after all, the Hunger Games are the perfect breeding ground for PTSD. Severe, life-threatening, interpersonal violence as well as witnessing atrocities and killing enemies in combat are particular risk factors for the disorder.
In her book, Suzanne Collins clearly describes Rue and Thresh as having dark brown skin and dark eyes. Cinna was described as having green eyes and short brown hair, meaning his ethnicity was open to interpretation. On Twitter, some questioned why Thresh was cast as a black man.
For one thing, Songbirds & Snakes is set 64 years before Katniss volunteers as tribute. That means there's probably a generation or two between Lucy Gray and Katniss if they are related. Fans also know who Katniss' mother is, so that rules out Lucy Gray being her mom.
Characterization. Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
Gale Hawthorne is Katniss Everdeen's best friend and hunting partner. In order to not cast suspicion on Katniss and Peeta Mellark's highly publicized strategic romance, Gale is presented as Katniss's cousin. He bears a resemblance to Katniss, which makes their cover believable.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
Their relationship was all friends. They trusted each other, but that doesn't mean they had romantic feelings for each other. Plus, Cinna's too old for Katniss.
President Snow sees her as an enemy since her combination of popularity and low-level defiance constitutes a threat to his power. He dreams up The Quarter Quell as a way of getting rid of her and murders Cinna in front of her as a way of rattling her just before she's tossed into the arena.
People who suffer from PTSD can also experience trouble sleeping, which both Katniss and Peeta deal with, exhibit self-destructive or reckless behavior or can be aggressive and irritable. Both tributes also have trouble controlling themselves and often react aggressively to situations that upset them.
In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.

He has betrayed her and is betraying all of District 12 by buddying up with the Careers, whom she calls the "Capitol's lapdogs." She decides that if the Careers don't kill him, she'd be more than happy to. Then, she wonders why Peeta hasn't told them about her bow and arrow skills yet.
Due to the horror of his Games, his grief over his family's and girlfriend's deaths, and the overwhelming guilt he felt from being obligated to participate in the Games he hated while each and every one of his mentored tributes died in them, Haymitch turned to alcoholism to cope with his issues and feelings.
