Mr. Miyagi was born on June 9, 1925, in Tomi Village Okinawa, Japan. He had a job working for his best friend Sato's father, who was the richest man in the village. In addition, he learned karate and fishing from his father Miyagi Chōjun, a fisherman.
In The Karate Kid (1984) Mr Miyagi says his country is Okinawa, not Japan. Although the island of Okinawa is part of Japan, most Okinawans separate themselves from the rest of Japan. Plus Mr Miyagi was an interned Japanese that fought for the US during WWII meaning he forswore allegiance to Japan.

Which Cobra Kai died in real life?
In real life, Tommy actor Rob Garrison died at the age of 59 in September 2019, a few months after Cobra Kai season 2 originally streamed on YouTube Premium. The actor had been hospitalized for a month with liver and kidney problems, and his organs finally shut down.
Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio filmed scenes for season three on the lush main island of Okinawa — the birthplace of karate and the site of one of World War II's bloodiest battles — over a few days.
Sensei Miyagi was born in Higashimachi, Naha, Okinawa on April 25, 1888. One of his parents was a wealthy shop owner. Chojun Miyagi began studying Okinawan martial arts under Ryuko Aragaki at age 11. At age 14, Miyagi was introduced to Kanryo Higashionna (Higaonna Kanryō) by Aragaki.
Apart from four jiu-jitsu lessons when I was 10, I had no martial arts experience. Before filming, I was trained in Okinawan Gōjū-ryū karate by Pat E Johnson, who coordinated the fight scenes and played the head referee in the tournament at the end of the film.
Uechi-ryu (上地流) is a traditional style of Okinawan karate. Uechi-ryu means “Style of Uechi”. Originally called Pangai-noon, which translates to English as “half-hard, half-soft”, the style was renamed Uechi-ryu after the founder of the style, Kanbun Uechi (1877-1948).
Not before being cast as Mr. Miyagi, no. He did train with a reputable black belt for the films, a Tang Soo Do black belt/stuntman named Pat Johnson who befriended Chuck Norris at a tournament and would go on to study karate directly under Chuck Norris and teach at several of his gyms.
Why does Mr Miyagi call Daniel "Daniel-san"? In the Japanese language, -san is a polite title that is used after a person's name, the equivalent of Mr., Mrs., or Miss. Daniel could just as easily refer to Mr Miyagi as "Miyagi-san".
He did not speak it as a child, but you can see here that he began learning it at some point. Here he writes his last name in Japanese, but not quite the way a native Japanese-speaker would.
Ralph has a younger brother named Steven. His father is of half Italian and half Greek descent, and his mother is of Italian ancestry. In a 1980 screen test, Macchio said his family was from Naples. In 1979, Macchio graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York.
Noriyuki “Pat” Morita was a Japanese-American actor who was well-known for playing the role of Arnold on Happy Days and known as Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movie series, in which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1984. Pat Morita was born in Isleton, California.
He was not at all experienced in martial arts prior to the filming of The Karate Kid (1984). He was actually an accomplished wrestler. However, in the years since, he has earned a black belt in Tang Soo Do.
Okinawans started changing the reading of their names in the 1880s because of discrimination they faced. So Ufugusuku 大城 became Oshiro and Naagusuku 宮城 became Miyagi and so forth. They kept the same Chinese characters for their names, but adopted a Japanese pronunciation.
Miyagi fought against the Japanese Empire in the Second World War and while he was doing that his wife Mrs. Miyagi, gave birth to a son inside an internment camp and got sick and they didn't send any doctor to her so she and the son both died. Mr. Miyagi still won a medal of honour for being a war hero.
The majority of “The Karate Kid Part II” was filmed on the stunning island of Oahu, Hawaii. While the film portrays the tropical paradise of Okinawa, Oahu's lush landscapes and similar climate provide a perfect stand-in. One of the most recognizable locations is the Miyagi-Do dojo.
Though the duo have only spoken highly of each other in the press, their friendship didn't kindle until years later — 2005, to be exact — when they reunited for the first time ever at Pat Morita (a.k.a. Mr. Miyagi)'s, funeral. “He caught my eye,” Ralph said in his memoir about the meeting.
If you've seen The Karate Kid film, he played the referee in the final tournament, and that was Pat Johnson. He taught all of us, trained me in goju-ryu style, Okinawan classic karate, and Pat Morita as well. He was a big part of creating all of those sequences. Most often I don't [use a stunt double].
Miyagi made a big speech about wanting to abandon this tradition so he could marry Yukie. Sato felt dishonored by this and challenged Miyagi to fight to the death. To avoid the fight, Mr. Miyagi left Okinawa during the night and emigrated to the United States.
