Like Every Disney Movie, Mulan (1998) is Made for Everyone
Like most Disney movies, Mulan is layered. By this I mean, it has a storyline children can follow while also having references, jokes, and a deeper message for older audience members.

It may be hard for the character's youngest fans, but this version really isn't for really little kids. It has lots of potentially disturbing action violence, as well as a few scenes in which it looks like beloved characters are injured or near death.
MULAN is an animated adventure about a young woman who disguises herself as a man and joins the army to save her elderly father from being conscripted. There is some mild fantasy violence in the battle scenes, with one fight, in particular, containing some martial arts moves and a head butt.

“Mulan” may not be for very young children, as it's become the first Disney live-action remake to receive a PG-13 rating. The new take on the Disney classic got the rating from the Motion Picture Association of America due to the “sequences of violence” apparently depicted in the film.
The 2020 remake of Mulan highlights the power of being true to yourself, with Mulan only finding her inner strength when she embraces herself as a powerful woman, once she has done this she transcends to the top of the mountain surpassing her male-counterparts with ease.
The cinematography is great and the colors are often vibrant, but the story is pretty dull. The lead actress is awfully bland as well. The action and music are standouts, but get bogged down by some pacing issues. My biggest issue with this film though is Mulan herself.
The issue was that Mulan was partially filmed in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, in close proximity to detention camps for Uighur Muslims, and Disney gave credit to “publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee” among other entities.
An early cut of the film featured a romantic scene in which Mulan shared a kiss with her love interest, Chen Honghui. But the production team eventually deleted the scene after reviewing the movie with Chinese audiences and local executives, the film's director Niki Caro told the press.
Additionally, Moana the character is a good role model for girls as she shows leadership skills, strength and independence. Moana isn't suitable for children under the age of 8 years. We recommend parental guidance for children aged up to 10 years because of the movie's violent and scary scenes.
While the social and cultural milieu of the Northern Wei dynasty provided the context for the tale's origins, there's no corroborative evidence to confirm that Mulan was ever a real person. Over time, the story and character's nomadic and tribal origins have significantly changed from the original.
It engages powerful themes that transcend time and place: heroism and self-sacrifice, courage and duty. And it also teaches an important truth, communicated more effectively because there is no preaching involved: a girl does not have to pretend to be a man in order to excel in a traditionally male domain.

There is much less language than there was in the first, with the exception of one f word near the end. There is nudity (for anyone who wants to have their kids look away, it is near the beginning when the kids visit the lab.
Unnecessary swearing throughout the movie as well. It's extremely mean spirited, violent and disgusting. And they now speak fluent English as well as fluent dirty slangs. Definitely not appropriate for any kids under 13.
The story of Hua Mulan originated in China and reflects Chinese gender culture. The Ballad of Mulan, a folk song from the Northern Dynasties, talks about the relationship between country and family through a story in which a daughter disguises her gender so that she can serve in the military in place of her father.

Nevertheless, the filmmakers still included a love interest for Mulan, and although there's no explicit portrayal of homosexuality, the undertones persist. Like Shang, many believe that her new love interest, Chen Honghui, is attracted to Mulan before he finds out that she's a woman.
WARNING: Minor Mulan spoilers ahead. Although Captain Li Shang does not, in fact, make a man out of Fa Mulan in the beloved 1998 animated film, he does manage to inadvertently reveal her womanhood and win her heart.
