In material that is now considered Legends, Qui-Gon is even described as a Gray Jedi. Additionally, the term has also been applied to Force-sensitives who aren't affiliated with the Light or Dark side of the Force. Quite literally, these Gray Jedi don't see things in black and white, or light versus dark.
Some members of the Jedi Order considered Qui-Gon Jinn a Gray Jedi. While the term was used to refer to Force users who walked the line between light and dark, Jedi were also labeled Gray Jedi for distancing themselves from the Jedi High Council.
Becoming the mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn sought to teach him the best he could. Jinn became a Jedi Master in his own right, a master who developed an independent attitude towards the Jedi Order. Others saw him as a maverick Jedi, one who would disobey the Jedi Code if he felt it was the right decision.
Characters like Cade Skywalker, Asajj Ventress, Quinlan Vos, Kreia, Revan, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, and Ahsoka Tano all demonstrate different aspects of being Gray Jedi.
The term “gray Jedi” in Star Wars is somewhat of a misnomer, considering that the definition refers to one who is practically non-Jedi. That being said, quite a few Jedi can be placed into this category. But Mace Windu identified as a Jedi despite his possible inclusion in the "gray" category.

Could Anakin be a GREY Jedi?
Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker can be considered gray Jedi because they possess traits of both Jedi and Sith philosophies and can traverse both sides of the Force.
In both canon and Legends, characters like Qui-Gon Jinn, Ahsoka Tano, and Luke Skywalker have disagreed with the Jedi Code but have never fully embraced the powers of the dark side, making them not true Gray Jedi.
Qui-Gon Jinn appears to Kenobi for the first time as a Force spirit. The first known Jedi to learn the secret was Qui-Gon Jinn, who learned it from a Shaman of the Whills. His training remained incomplete at the time of his death, so he could only manifest as a disembodied voice.
The late Master's legacy suggests that he may have actually been a Sith working against the Jedi Order all along, successfully orchestrating the downfall of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire.
Some of Cal's actions in Jedi: Survivor may hint at him being a Gray Jedi. He loosely fits the definition of a Gray Jedi that walks paths of the Force without falling entirely to the dark side. The complication here, however, is that Cal doesn't willingly walk the dark side.
Qui-Gon was Dooku's apprentice. Dooku loved Qui-Gon like a son due to their many similarities; both were individualists, idealists, and both had knowledge of the Force that was unique.

Not only was Obi-Wan tired toward the end of the battle, but Qui-Gon was as well. When Qui-Gon and Maul are separated by a force field, Qui-Gon kneels and rests for a moment—gathering what little strength he had left to try and finish off Maul.

Mace Windu appears as a Force ghost in the alternate history comic Star Wars Infinities: The Empire Strikes Back in a vision to Darth Vader, though this may only be a mental vision in Vader's mind as opposed to an actual Force ghost.
Legend had it that Yoda—a Jedi who became Grand Master—was trained by N'Kata Del Gormo. A Force-sensitive Hysalrian, N'Kata Del Gormo was trained in the ways of the Force and achieved the rank of Master within the Jedi Order.
At the end of Revenge of the Sith, it is revealed that Qui-Gon has learned how to become a Force spirit after death, teaching the idea to Yoda during the Clone Wars and later to Obi-Wan.
He was: Darth Tyrannus. His persona as Count Dooku was better suited to his role as leader of the Separatist faction. If he revealed himself as a Sith publicly, rather than just a former Jedi who left the order because of its supposed corruption, that would have damaged his credibility to most of the Separatists.
Ok so let's get into it Mace Windu survives, The fall but he has lost his weapon and is servilely wounded in now hostile territory. This is why I believe he would go into hiding for some time thoughout the early years of The Galactic Empire.
A maverick who operates outside the Jedi Council, Ahsoka acknowledges the ways in which the Jedi Order was misguided, but still rejects the Dark Side, especially after what happened to her former Jedi Master. This in-between has encouraged many fans to call Ahsoka a Gray Jedi.
