What many get wrong about the Rocky films is that they aren't boxing films (at least not the first 3). They are parables about what it means to be a man, rich with Catholic symbolism (Sylvester Stallone himself has stated that Rocky is a religious character). In the first Rocky film, Rocky is a nobody.
