Well the hammer doesn't need to be of vibranium. Thor hammers is made out of uru metal which is one of the rarest metal in nine relm of marvel universe. Uru metal is as durable as pure adimantium (The thing out of which Wolverine skeleton is made ).

Vibranium is actually an alien metal that crashed to earth, hence its fantastical properties. While there were different crash sites throughout the globe, the most prominent was in the African country of Wakanda (also fictional).
