Was Nick Fury a Skrull in any of the movies? The Marvel fans who pay attention to details and stick around for the famous post-credit scenes will know that Nick Fury has indeed already been a Skrull at one point in the MCU.
'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Revealed Nick Fury Was a Skrull
Before saying goodbye and kicking off a new storyline, the MCU had to show the lasting effects of the Infinity Saga. That's why the last chapter is actually Spider-Man: Far From Home, a movie set months after Endgame.
Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com, director Ali Selim has confirmed that the dark theory that Rhodey has been a Skrull ever since Captain America: Civil War is actually true. "Yep. He's been a Skrull the whole time, yeah," Selim revealed, adding that the reveal has "massive implications" for the MCU.
While Fury was in space, Skrull general Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) assumed his identity on Earth. This apparently only happened on one occasion that we know of — Far From Home claims that Fury had only been off-world for a year — but one viral theory suggests that Fury has been in space for much longer than we thought.
But while the Skrull invasion is only beginning to come to light in the MCU, the theory that a Skrull had already replaced Nick Fury a long time ago has existed as early as 2015 with the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Fury's suspicions were confirmed when he listened in on a chat between his Skrull wife Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard) and imposter Rhodes, a conversation in which Rhodes ordered the hit on Fury (Samuel L Jackson).
After teasing for three episodes, Secret Invasion has revealed Don Cheadle's Rhodey is a Skrull, delivering on Marvel Comics' impostor Avengers idea with huge ramifications.
Is Nick Fury a villain or a hero? Nick Fury is a hero, most notably known for being the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., founding the Avengers, and preventing Gravik's Skrull Resistance from starting World War III. He has been described as serious, heroic, and ambitious, and he wears an eye-patch over his left eye.
Nick Fury killed the Watcher during Original Sin, and when the Avengers found out, there was a massive battle. Fury made Thor question his worthiness, leading to Jane Foster's tenure as Thor. Then Fury became the Unseen. Fury took the Watcher's place and spent years on the moon, living up to his new name.
A rogue Skrull pirate, Raava struck back against the Skrull Empire following the deaths of her off-spring, Skragg and Raavaka. In the wake of her carnage, she was sentenced to a lifetime at a secret deep-space torture prison.
This Skrull was brainwashed to believe he was the captured Avenger, Iron Man. When his prison ship crashed in the Savage Land, he fought against the real Avengers, thinking they were the Skrulls. When a T-Rex broke up the fight, the heroes and Skrulls were scattered, and the Tony Stark Skrull was not seen again.
The Skrulls appeared in the 2019 film Captain Marvel led by Talos. However, as opposed to being ruthless conquerors depicted in the comics, they are fierce yet benevolent creatures who are victims of a genocidal war committed by the Kree Empire (led by the Supreme Intelligence).
So, the implication would be that Rhodey has been a Skrull since the events of Civil War, meaning the character we've been following on screen since 2016, nearly a decade in MCU years, has been an imposter this entire time.
Fury went to his old friend on the Council, Alexander Pierce, to delay the Insight launch while he investigated the info gained by the Black Widow. But when Pierce, secretly a Hydra leader, ordered Fury killed, the S.H.I.E.L.D. director gave Captain America the data and then faked his own death to go deep undercover.
He was busy getting his "midlife crisis spending" gift -- the Avengers. Fury spent much of his time in the early MCU wrangling these heroes. This means he likely ignored the Skrulls, and his promise to them, well before anyone on Earth heard of an infinity stone.
Fury was selected to be the next test subject for Project: Rebirth, as his blood work most closely matched that of Subject #22, the most successful of the previous test subjects. He was injected with a serum that gave him super-strength, which he used to free himself and the other prisoners, who then escaped.
As explained in ULTIMATE X-MEN (2001) #11, Ultimate Fury was transporting Weapon X through Kuwait when their convoy was ambushed. He lost his left eye in the explosion but was ultimately saved by the man who would become Wolverine. And, he's worn the eyepatch ever since!
Martin Freeman, who portrays Agent Everett Ross on Secret Invasion and in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, said he doesn't believe his character has always been a Skrull. Freeman's comments come after Agent Ross was revealed to be Skull in the opening sequence of the first episode of Secret Invasion.
This week's excellent two-hander was the scene in which Fury confronted his wife about her betrayal. He said he wouldn't have done anything differently, even if he had known she was a Skrull spy, then she regaled him with the story of how she chose Priscilla's appearance.
The ending of Secret Invasion episode 2 may have led some to think Priscilla was keeping her status as a Skrull a secret from Fury. However, it stands to reason that Fury knows his wife is a Skrull, especially if they've been together for an implied 30 years.
The most likely option would be that Rhodes was kidnapped by the Skrulls at some point between his last MCU appearance (either on the big screen in Avengers: Endgame or during his brief appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and the start of Secret Invasion.
