It is more than just being in Thor's shadow - Loki is always comparing himself to his brother, and also their father Odin, finding himself lacking. A better put together Loki would have realized that he can only be himself, that he couldn't ever live up to being someone who isn't himself.

Borderline Personality Disorder. On the surface, Loki may appear confident, self-assured, and composed. Spend enough time with him, and we'd see what Thor sees. Loki's mood swings, recklessness, and impulsivity make him difficult to be around.
So let's take a moment to break down this popular character's personality type. Loki has been described by some as a narcissist and by others as a psychopath.

Personality. Loki is the God of Mischief, an expert liar and trickster. He is a charming, unpredictable, spontaneous, cunning, gifted, and extremely intelligent man. He is often devilish, and many times betrayed even his loved ones to achieve his own goals, but he eventually proves himself as a good-hearted individual.

He's never loved anyone because he doesn't feel he deserves it. Falling in love with Sylvie, i.e. himself, is the only person he'll permit himself to fall for because he doesn't deserve anyone other than his own wretched self.
Loki is a master schemer, in his own right he is a certified Genius. By my standards Loki is 8th or 9th class/level sorcerer. For comparison that means he's on Hank Pyms level of smarts. He might not be an engineer but smarts in sorcery is not something to scoff at.
Given so much of Loki's MCU story has centered on his transition from villain to hero, oftentimes his stint as the former villain character archetype in the franchise can be forgotten. Loki's fan-favorite status also means that his villainous beginnings in the MCU are forgotten in favor of his more lovable side.
He has friends, not merely people he manipulates. And if he doesn't act they will all die too. And so Loki finally finds his glorious purpose — he sacrifices himself to save the universe, but more importantly to save the people he has come to care about.

He had constantly been feeling second after his brother, Thor, who was faster, stronger, luckier than him, and had more attention from parents, particularly father, Odin, whom Loki was unsuccessfully trying to impress.
However, through the use of his sorcery, Loki's ability to heal himself is far above that of other Asgardians. His magical energies are so imbued into his body that he can reattach severed limbs and, while still a male, even reattached his own head at least once.
