Mace Windu was a male Korun Human Jedi Master of legendary status who was the Master of the Order in the days leading up to the Battle of Geonosis, after which he gave the title to Grand Master Yoda.
Mace Windu was a revered Force-sensitive human male Jedi Master and member of the Jedi High Council during the last years of the Republic Era. During his time in the Jedi Order, he once served as elected leader of the Jedi and, during the Clone Wars, as a Jedi General in the Grand Army of the Republic.
The title was shared by Jedi Masters Xo Lahru, Pra-Tre Veter, and Yoda during the High Republic Era. Yoda continued to serve as the Grand Master in the final years of the Galactic Republic, and was one of the few survivors of the Great Jedi Purge that commenced near the end of the Clone Wars.
Mace Windu may seem like an out-of-left-field pick for a list of characters stronger than Yoda, but he was a Jedi council member of equal ranking to the little green Jedi of unknown origin.
Over the next decade, the galaxy was on the verge of civil war with entire star systems—led by Count Dooku, Yoda's one-time Padawan—threatening to secede from the Republic by 22 BBY.
Sidious quickly murdered Jedi Masters Agen Kolar, and Saesee Tiin almost immediately, while Kit Fisto was murdered only a few seconds after, but Sidious had an extended confrontation with Windu. The lightsaber duel lasted until Windu disarmed the Sith Lord and knocked him to the floor.
The term “gray Jedi” in Star Wars is somewhat of a misnomer, considering that the definition refers to one who is practically non-Jedi. That being said, quite a few Jedi can be placed into this category. But Mace Windu identified as a Jedi despite his possible inclusion in the "gray" category.

Most Jedi who climbed the ranks ended their careers as a Jedi Master. But one final rank—the Jedi Grand Master—was held by the one considered to be the wisest of the Jedi Masters. During the prequel era, Yoda was the Grand Master of the Jedi Order.
The use of his Vapaad style would have given him an automatic advantage while fighting against any dark side user. So, while Star Wars fans never saw a knock-down, drag-out fight between these two icons, it seems likely that Windu would've bested the former Jedi.
In canon, Mace Windu mastered all seven forms of lightsaber combat. Mace Windu was considered and called the champion of the Jedi. He was considered to be both a champion of the Jedi Order and one of the best lightsaber duelists ever produced.
Other fans feel that the Star Wars franchise will definitively introduce Gray Jedi to the canon. For these fans, Rey Skywalker will herald in a new era of canon Gray Jedi. Like Ahsoka in some ways, Rey isn't necessarily bound by Jedi teachings, and certainly doesn't see the world in black and white.

While Darth Maul was one of the most fearsome Sith Lords in the Star Wars galaxy before his fall from grace, he once received a vision from the Force where he became a Jedi Knight.
A Sith Lord with the ability to cheat death and create life, Plagueis is the mentor of Sheev Palpatine / Darth Sidious, who, in accordance to the Sith's Rule of Two, eventually betrays Plagueis by murdering him in his sleep, taking his place as Sith Master.
As the first Dark Lord of the Sith, Ajunta Pall founded the first Sith Empire and expanded it onto other worlds. The Sith took over the planet Ziost and created it as their capital and as Pall's new home.
Why was Mace Windu able to beat Palpatine but Yoda couldn t?
He is too intelligent to risk himself without good reason. I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but the reason Mace won is because of Vaapad, his unique dueling style. It essentially dips his feet in the dark side, using the opponent's negative emotions against them to fuel his own power.
Windu at the very least can contend with Vader with a asaber and the force but his vaapad amps him enough that he can take down Vader. Legends Vader is on a whole nother level though. Legends Vader took on 5 Jedi Masters, two Knights, and a Padawan at once. He even got his arm cut off at one point and still won.
Mace does have some advantages, for example shatterpoint and Vaapad. However, even with these advantages Windu would be defeated by Vader. The Dark Lord is one of the best duelists in canon, slightly more superior than Palpatine to the point that even Palpatine indicated Vader's strength and power.
