Thanos wanted to preserve life in the universe (with very questionable methods, though), and The Emergence, which meant the destruction of entire planets, went against that. The snap would have become even more important to him as it meant the delay of The Emergence, thus saving planets and lives.
We know Thanos culled half the population of any planet he conquered. He says its to prevent overpopulation, but what if its not the whole truth. Thanos might have found out the truth of the Eternals and rebelled, he tried to appeal to the masses, but they didn't believe him.
Thanos sees overpopulation as a threat and believes the solution is to kill half of all creatures so the other half can live better on the available resources. This brings up an important question: if he's all powerful, why not grow more food and double the resources instead?
