A former HYDRA infiltrator in S.H.I.E.L.D., disguised as a Level 7 operative, he was abused as a child by his family. As a teenager, he tried to burn down his family home. Ward was imprisoned until he was freed by John Garrett, who trained Ward to become a cold-blooded killer.
While the television series saw Ward trained by Hydra as a teen before he infiltrated SHIELD as the perfect agent, the comics went a different route. His backstory revealed that he was SHIELD before he was Hydra in the comic book 616 universe. Grant Ward was actually placed undercover at Hydra.

Not to protect anyone, but because he wanted Ward dead. So, he leaves the tool he used for the job there, trying to put the whole thing behind him to forget about it.

Drama and conflict ensue at the airport runway, as John B tries to stop the plane from taking off using “the Twinkie,” his Volkswagen van. The local sheriff arrives not long after, telling Ward he's being arrested for killing Big John.
When Big John figures out where the gold can be found, he demands a larger percentage of the treasure from Ward. In a fit of rage, Ward then shoves Big John, causing him to hit his head on the side of the boat. Assuming Big John is dead, Ward throws his body overboard.
Ward told Fitz that if he refused, Simmons would be tortured. Fitz remained silent, and Ward ordered R. Giyera to torture Simmons, which he complied with by using his power to beat her with metal implements.
She discovered her mother's lineage's alien-based origin and was exposed to the Terrigen Mist, granting her vibration manipulation abilities. The activation of her Inhuman abilities alerted the attention of other Inhumans, and Skye was taken to Afterlife to help her better understand her powers.
Dissapointed, Quinn shot Skye twice in the stomach, and left her to die on the floor. Coulson eventually made it to the compound and found her dying, and Jemma Simmons had the idea to place her in the Hyperbaric Chamber in the room, which kept her alive, though it wouldn't work forever.
Skye became obsessed with finding out the truth about her parents and eventually she ran away and joined the Rising Tide, a computer activist (Or as Skye would say, "hacktivist") group.
