Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) commands the magical creatures of her kingdom, including the powerful tree warrior, the luminous water fairy, and the gargantuan forest dragon. They all stand with the dark fairy against those who dare invade her land. No creature is more loyal than shape shifter Diaval (Sam Riley).
During this time, Maleficent's species is identified as 'Dark Fey', although Maleficent's powers are unique to her due to her being the latest reincarnation of the powerful Phoenix.
The Moors are an enchanted forest which inhabits numerous creatures. The forest was invaded by King Henry's Army, but they were defeated by Maleficent, the Forest Dragon, and the Spriggans. It was formerly ruled by Maleficent and later by Aurora.
Spriggans are an army of humanoid trees that inhabit the Moors. When King Henry's army attempted to take over the Moors, Maleficent showed up and called the Tree Warriors and the Forest Dragon to defeat the human kingdom's army. They also served as Maleficent's loyal subjects when she claims herself Queen of the Moors.

Diaval was a raven in the Moors. One day he flew into the Human Kingdom and some man caught him in a net. Maleficent saw it and transformed Diaval into a human.
Dark Fae are a species of winged fairies, with wings resembling those of birds. They are descended from an ancient Phoenix. Dark Fae have many subspecies, such as jungle variants, dessert variants, and forest variants.
As Aurora attempts to fit in with Phillip's family, Maleficent discovers her heritage as a “dark fae,” a race of fairies who went into hiding after being hunted nearly to extinction.
When you consider that purple is often associated with power, nobility, luxury and ambition, it makes sense. Those characteristics are certainly reflected in characters like Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Dr.

After this event, the pixies were responsible for taking care of Aurora until her sixteenth birthday and are her adoptive aunts.
Before Disney got hold of the word, "maleficent" was a highfalutin adjective meaning "causing harm," the opposite of "beneficent." Even if you were not quite sure what it meant, you would know from the "mal-" prefix that it was up to no good, in the same wicked family as "malignant," "malevolent," and "malicious."
