Gothel fatally stabs Flynn upon his arrival and attempts to leave with Rapunzel, who offers to go willingly with her if she can heal Flynn. Gothel reluctantly releases her. However, Flynn unexpectedly cuts Rapunzel's hair, causing it to lose its magic and turn brown.
Events follow the course of the film. In the final scene where Flynn dies, he is only saved by the intervention of Circe, who stops the Odd Sisters from interfering and brings him back to life using Rapunzel's tears as a catalyst. They later get married.
Mother Gothel was the despicable villain of Tangled, and she could have gotten away with her evil deeds if not for two fatal mistakes. The woman had kidnapped Rapunzel from her royal parents to keep her magical hair all to herself, and she was successful at this for 18 years.
Mother Gothel uses a variety of subtle emotional and psychological abuses to manipulate Rapunzel into staying in the tower. Is Mother Gothel abusive?
Gothel is a once-beautiful but now aging narcissist who restores her youth and beauty as long as she is exposed to Rapunzel's healing long hair. Gothel is the archetype of the worst in deceptive, abusive, and even violent narcissism.
To the essayist's knowledge, one of the closest film adaptations to the Grimm's tale is the 1983 Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre film Rapunzel. Gothel locks Rapunzel in the tower because “you can't trust men” and to prevent a man from separating them (Cates, Rapunzel).
According to Flynn Rider, she has been using it for hundreds of years. When the queen uses it, Mother Gothel wants to get it back, so she breaks into the palace and cuts off a lock of Rapunzel's hair to keep for herself.
vain, manipulative, and selfish. Mother Gothel has some motherly, nurturing qualities, but they're always as part of a façade used to maintain control over Rapunzel. How did Mother Gothel get up the tower before Rapunzel?
At the base of the tower is an alternate entrance Mother Gothel used to go in and out of the tower before she took Rapunzel and in the years that she was too young to pull her up, with a hidden trapdoor leading up into the main rooms of the Tower.
Now, it's possible that Gothel feels some fondness for Rapunzel. But based on her actions, she clearly does not love Rapunzel at all. Rapunzel is someone who ultimately must be put up with in order maintain what Gothel really loves more than anything: herself.
Before Rapunzel could heal him however, Eugene cut Rapunzel's hair, removing her ability to heal anybody and removing her from her obligation to Mother Gothel.

Gothel did care for Rapunzel but not because she was a person, but because of what she could give Gothel. She loved her hair, her magic more than anything.
Rapunzel was eventually freed from Gothel by her lover Eugene Fitzherbert as Pascal and threw Gothel out of the tower and destroyed Rapunzels powers that kept Gothel alive. It is unknown of the fall from the tower killed her or that she turned to dust because of Rapunzels hair being cut off first.
According to the Brothers Grimm, Princess Rapunzel is named after the cultivated vegetable of the same name, growing in a witch's garden. The wording of the story suggested to me that the Grimms' contemporaries would be familiar with the plant as a vegetable, that it wasn't a fantastical invented thing.
Rapunzel's real story is said to have been loosely based on a true story about a woman, Saint Barbara, in Italy around the 3rd century. The story of Barbara was that she was so beautiful that her father felt he had to lock her in a tower to protect her.

However, I think Mother Gothel's violent angry outbursts and her overt manipulation of everyone around her make Narcissistic Personality Disorder-Grandiose subtype much more accurate.
