Leaving her friends behind, Elsa crosses the Dark Sea to Ahtohallan (with a little help from a kelpie called Nokk), and commands the spirit (in song) to "Show Yourself." She learns that she is actually the fifth spirit of the forest, connecting the other four.
Elsa was shown the source of the voice: her mother calling to the Wind Spirit while holding an unconscious Agnarr. From there, she learned that her powers were a gift from the magic of nature as a reward for Iduna's act of saving her enemy.

The symbolic explanation for why Elsa froze is more straightforward. Elsa freezes in response to the trauma of discovering her family's colonial past. Similar to the plot in Frozen, Elsa is overcome with emotion and loses control of her powers — she is so overwhelmed by her own ice magic that she is literally frozen.
If anyone understands the negative repercussions of bottling your feelings up, it's our Elsa. Doing nothing but inadvertent damage, it's not until she breaks away and ulimately reunites with her sister that things start to improve for the pair. Offloading pent-up feelings is always a healthy idea.
Children respond to stories that employ magical realism, so Elsa—as a superhero with what one of our daughters (Maryam's) and her friends call “ice powers” (the ability to create a whole castle of snow and ice using only her fingers)—has special appeal.

According to Iduna, Ahtohallan is considered a spirit and is the "mother" of all the other spirits. According to Iduna's notes, Ahtohallan is the source of the magic in the Enchanted Forest as well as those of the spirits, including Elsa's powers.
The simple version is that her ice powers were a gift from the spirits, bestowed on her because of the actions of her mother, Queen Iduna, in saving her father, King Agnarr, during the battle between the people of Arendelle and Northuldra.
Why didn't Elsa's mom tell her husband she saved him?
Due to the bad blood between their people, Iduna kept both her heritage and her rescue of Agnarr in the forest a secret for many years, though she finally confessed everything to him shortly before their deaths.
It's finally happening: Disney is plotting a return the return of Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Kristoff in Frozen 3. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a third Frozen movie was currently in development during a year-end earnings call in February 2023.
The implication, and it's only ever just that, is that Elsa and Anna's mother is herself somehow attuned to the magical forces such that Elsa was given the gift of superpowers. (Why Anna never received such powers is equally vaguely defined: just as Elsa and Anna's father had no powers, so too would she be power-free.

Unbeknownst to Agnarr, Iduna is actually a Northuldran and was the girl that rescued him on the day of his father's death. Because of the kingdom's negative feelings towards the Northuldra, Iduna kept her heritage a secret for many years, though she finally told him everything shortly before their deaths.
In conclusion, Elsa is only the fifth spirit because of her mothers sacrifice of her powers. Queen Iduna was the fifth spirit all along and chooses to save King Agnarr knowing that as a royal, she would need to be with him to have her royal daughters.
She died and was reborn to take on her true form like has happened in so many stories before. With that transformation, Frozen 2 has made Elsa an immortal spirit now. Like how Frozen 2's other four spirits appear as animals but more than just that, Elsa still appears human but is more than just that.
Anna isn't immortal, but just an ordinary person despite how extraordinary her sister is. Kristoff is as ordinary as they come, along with everyone else in Arendelle. This means that Elsa is likely going to outlive all of them. She'll see Anna's kids grow up to take the throne, then even they'll die.
