Pietro Maximoff's screen time in Avengers: Age of Ultron is 26:43. Pietro's first and final words in the film are "You didn't see that coming?", who said it both times to Hawkeye.
Maximoff can also sense the minds and emotions of those around her as she could see Stark's fear in an earlier encounter with her and sensed Pietro's death, knowing exactly what happened to him, as if she had seen it directly.
Kevin Feige and the filmmakers maintain the decision to kill Pietro was one made for story reasons alone. However, there may have been some rights issues at play. Because they were mutants, both Wanda and Pietro were characters covered under the agreement Marvel Entertainment had with 20th Century Fox.
If Quicksilver had survived Avengers: Age of Ultron and Hawkeye died, it appears that Pietro would've taken a place on the New Avengers roster. He saw the positive aspect of what the Avengers could be during the third act and worked alongside the rest of the heroes to stop Ultron.

What if Quicksilver never died?
During Age of Ultron, though, Quicksilver would have been able to save a lot of people using his superspeed, but this would likely result in a tremendous amount of guilt regarding his actions, which would serve as his main motivation.
Following the events of Sokovia and destroying Ultron, Barton returned home as promised and retired from the Avengers. The Bartons named their newborn son Nathaniel Pietro Barton after Quicksilver and Romanoff.
