Just before Katniss goes before the audience for the homecoming banquet, Haymitch gives her a hug and whispers that the Capitol is furious with her for making them look like a joke. Her only defense can be that she was so madly in love with Peeta, she didn't care how her actions might reflect upon the Capitol.
Haymitch says Katniss shouldn't be angry because Peeta made her look desirable, something she couldn't achieve on her own. They didn't tell Katniss because they wanted her reaction to be real. Katniss realizes Haymitch is right, she may gain an advantage with sponsors now, and she apologizes to Peeta.
When she gets back to her sleeping bag, she sees a gift that Haymitch must have gotten from her sponsors and sent during the anthem. It's a burn ointment, and it instantly soothes Katniss's hands and leg.
What is Haymitch's last piece of advice to Peeta and Katniss?
Haymitch's final advice is to start running at the sound of the gong, to ignore the Cornucopia and put as much distance as possible between themselves and the other tributes, and to find water. That night, sleep eludes Katniss, so she heads up to the rooftop to get some air. She finds Peeta there, his hands bandaged.
She steps outside and a gift falls from the sky, a pot of broth. She understands the message Haymitch is sending her: kisses and romance will earn them gifts.
Toward the end of the novel, Katniss realizes that Haymitch has been keeping information from her and using her to help the rebellion, causing her to feel extremely betrayed. On the other hand, his goals are generally good ones.
No one on earth could endure the torture that Peeta went through without being horrifically traumatized, but the fact that he was so forthright about his love for Katniss didn't do him any favors in that department either.
If they don't interfere with his drinking, Haymitch says he'll help them. His first piece of advice is that whatever the stylists do to them, they shouldn't resist. The train finally arrives at the Capitol.
Chaff, of course, comes right out and kisses Katniss, though his reason is more to have fun with Katniss's image than to turn it to his advantage. Finnick's and Johanna's tactics, however, are clearly deliberate attempts to manipulate Katniss, and Katniss immediately distrusts both as a result.

She is angry she wasn't informed of the plan and lashes out at him. Despite the fact that Haymitch has been working since the very beginning to save her, she cannot forgive him for letting the Capitol take Peeta alive.
Katniss understands and asks if Peeta's been told about this, but Haymitch says he doesn't need to tell Peeta because "He's already there." As Katniss readies herself to take the stage, she realizes that, although she has made it out of the arena, the most dangerous part of the Hunger Games has begun.

Gale is jealous of Peeta and the relationship he has with Katniss, and he wants Katniss to decide between them, though he doesn't press Katniss during her recovery in District 13. Gale is an excellent hunter and excels at setting snares and traps.
Gale is neither truly friends nor enemies with Peeta Mellark though he has felt jealous of Peeta due to the show that Peeta and Katniss put on for the cameras. In Catching Fire, Peeta knew Katniss had feelings for him and fully accepted that he would allow Katniss to be with Gale if it meant her happiness.
