Peeta, however, knows that the Games can change people, and he wants to at least die as himself. He wants to, in some way, rebel against the Capitol and show them that they don't own him, making the reader wonder how he might choose to do this in the Games.
He says he wants to die as himself, not as some kind of monster, and wishes he could think of a way to show the Capitol they don't own him. In the morning, Katniss boards a hovercraft. She is injected with a tracker, and with Cinna, departs for the arena.
Katniss wonders what his motive is in volunteering for this task, then realizes that Peeta is just being nice. In one particularly memorable scene before the Games occur, Peeta confesses to Katniss that his only hope for the Games is to retain his identity and not to be made into a monster by his circumstances.
Peeta knows that he likely won't survive the Hunger Games; what he's more concerned with is making sure the traumatic experience of the Games does not irrevocably change him. Thus far, Peeta has shown himself to be a genuinely good person – the type of person willing to take a beating to save another's life.

Does Peeta sacrifice himself?
The Hunger Games are just full of sacrifices. Katniss makes a huge personal sacrifice when she takes her sister's place in the Hunger Games. She and Peeta sacrifice themselves for each other at the end of the Games when they pop the berries in their mouth. Katniss and Peeta are willing to die together.
In the 74th Hunger Games, Peeta used mud to camouflage himself into rocks at the river bank when he was injured, as Cato stabbed his thigh to the bone and Peeta had no way of healing himself. Katniss Everdeen also used mud to camouflage her bright orange backpack with her surroundings.
Peeta is the same age as Katniss, making him 16 years old in The Hunger Games and 17-18 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta is of "medium height, stocky build" and has "ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead." He has blue eyes.
Given that she is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Peeta, it's safe to assume that the Morphling was committed to the rebel cause. Like the other victors, she knows the power that Katniss has as a lightning rod for the rebellion, and she knows that Katniss will not help without Peeta.
No one on earth could endure the torture that Peeta went through without being horrifically traumatized, but the fact that he was so forthright about his love for Katniss didn't do him any favors in that department either.

Why so evil, Peeta? Well, as we learn at the beginning of Mockingjay (spoilers, obv), he's been brainwashed by a method called “hijacking,” in which Tracker Jacker venom is injected to create hallucinations. In this particular case, he's been brainwashed to hate Katniss.
It took time for Peeta to break out of that conditioning, and even when the possibility existed that Peeta could be a danger to Katniss, the two of them still elected to be together and build a future in a post-Hunger-Games world. Their love for one another is evident.

He has betrayed her and is betraying all of District 12 by buddying up with the Careers, whom she calls the "Capitol's lapdogs." She decides that if the Careers don't kill him, she'd be more than happy to. Then, she wonders why Peeta hasn't told them about her bow and arrow skills yet.

Tracker jacker venom is used to associate fear with certain memories, and to alter those memories with hallucinations. It is difficult, but not impossible, to fully cure. It was most notably used on Peeta Mellark during the rebellion in Mockingjay.
Katniss is at first so angry with Peeta for his comments, believing that he made her look weak, that when they get off on floor 12, she shoves him. He knocks an urn over, shattering it, and then falls and cuts his hands on the shards.
