Shmi dies in the arms of her son. Through their strong bond with one another, Anakin was overcome with nightmares of his mother, in which he had sensed her pain and suffering. Unable to bear them any longer, Anakin traveled to Tatooine to find her, bringing Padmé Amidala and R2-D2 with him.
The Tusken Raiders tortured, mutilated and starved Shmi Skywalker while she was their captive. She was also denied medical treatment and consequently died from her wounds. The most probable explanation is that Shmi was at the wrong place at the wrong time. There is also another theory that hints that Palpatine could have manipulated the Tuskens to purposely take Shmi in order to drive Anakin closer to the dark side.
The Reasons Behind the Tusken Raiders' Abduction of Shmi
Lucas changed gears slightly in Attack of the Clones, not only by using them as a convenient threat to kill Shmi but to demonstrate the prejudice that the planet's humans have and how that contributed to Anakin's rapid loss of perspective.
