What happens in the book: Harry ends another insufferable summer at the Dursleys and hears about an escaped murderer, Sirius Black, in the Muggle news. The wizarding world is also buzzing about the infamous Sirius, who had been held at Azkaban, a maximum-security prison for those who have committed severe crimes.
It chronicles Harry's third year at Hogwarts and his quest to uncover the truth about his past, including the connection recently-escaped Azkaban prisoner Sirius Black has to Harry and his deceased parents. With this film, the Harry Potter series switched to a longer eighteen-month production cycle.
Frightened that he will be under arrest by the Ministry of Magic for the improper use of magic by an underage wizard, Harry tries to run away but is picked up by a magical bus and delivered to Diagon Alley, where he is able to meet his Hogwarts friends and purchase his supplies for the new school year.

How does Harry Potter book 3 end?
Although Harry and Hermione don't manage to clear Sirius' name, they succeed in freeing him from his cell and offering an escape route with Buckbeak. With Lupin forced to resign after his lycanthropy is exposed, the film ends on a bittersweet note but sets up the path for new characters in the franchise.

Cuarón had a unique directing style and a specific vision for the movie. He also hadn't read the books and didn't feel constricted by J.K. Rowling's descriptions. The school was darker, the shots were more dynamic and open, and characters abandoned their wizard-styled robes for more traditional Muggle clothing.
