Jordan Peele opens his superb new horror film Get Out with the refrain of Childish Gambino's “Redbone”: “Stay woke.” It's a straightforward message from the film to its protagonist, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a black man whose visit to his girlfriend's parents' house quickly turns into a nightmare of suburban racism.
Through the character development of Chris, the film explores the experience of being a person of color in western society. Chris' journey represents the struggle to maintain his identity and agency in the face of systemic racism and exploitation.
What does the deer in the beginning of Get Out mean?
The deer that is hit by a car early in the film represents Chris' past trauma, particularly the death of his mother via hit-and-run, which deeply affects him but seems to go unnoticed by his girlfriend Rose.
A man wearing a bizarre-looking helmet emerges from the shadows, knocks out Lakeith aka Andre unconscious, who is then bundled into the back of the car. And if the beginning is petrifying, the rest of it, one correctly assumes, would be that much harder to digest.
The "caretaker" is out on the lawn running sprints with haunting concentration. It's later revealed that Walter is actually Rose's (Allison Williams) grandfather, who really, truly did not ever get over losing to Jesse Owens in Olympic qualifications.
When the flash goes off in Logan's face his demeanor changes. Physical symptoms manifest which include a nose bleed, fear in his eyes and lunging at Chris saying "Get out". Initially, this perception of this is interpreted as aggression, but later he learns that Logan was actually warning him.
First, the separation of the milk and Froot Loops belies Rose's beliefs in the segregation of people by skin tone. She is figuratively separating white people from people of color by literally refusing to mix the white milk and the colored Froot Loops.
For example, that Missy's use of tea cups to hypnotize her victims represents the long history of European colonialism tied to the tea trade. Or that the cotton Chris crucially notices sticking out of a hole in his chair in the finale is a visual reference to the Old South's use of slave labor for picking cotton.
In the beginning the rabbits were locked up in cages, symbolizing the loss of free will and movement. When Adelaide was switched, Red had more control of her body as she was from the surface. Since she had control she was able to free the rabbits from their cages.
Rose and her family reveal their true nature, and the Armitage family are revealed to be the leading members of a secret cult known as the Order of the Coagula (founded by Rose's grandfather Roman) whose main objective is achieving immortality through transferring their brains into African American bodies.
In Get Out, the flash of a camera phone is a flash back into the actuary fear and terror of living under white supremacy as a black body. It is a warning to reject colorblindness, to “get out” of post-racial ideologies, and to resist the normalization of racialized violence.
Who kidnapped the guy in the beginning of Get Out?
6 months prior to the film's events, Logan was a very old man along with his wife Philomena and decided to obtain a black person's body to achieve pseudo-immortality per the Order's traditions. To that end, the Order's current leader Dean Armitage had his son Jeremy Armitage kidnap Andre to the Armitage mansion.
In a video presentation, Rose's grandfather Roman explains that the family transplants people's brains into others' bodies, granting them preferred physical characteristics and a twisted form of immortality. The host's consciousness remains in the Sunken Place, alive but powerless.
Earlier, Missy—a therapist—had offered to hypnotize Chris to cure him of his nicotine cravings. It's clear, both to Chris and to the viewer, that a trap is being sprung.
In Get Out, the coagula procedure renders the African American victim powerless. They are forced into a metaphorical version of slavery where white people steal their bodies and use them for their own purposes.
Chris catches back up to us very quickly. When he wants a cigarette and realizes that the thought of it makes him sick, he knows he was hypnotized. Dramatic irony here was used to heighten tension. The fact that Chris figures it out quickly, demonstrates that he's a smart guy.
Why did everyone stop talking when Chris went upstairs?
On first viewing, it's just an eerie moment, but in hindsight, the sudden silence is due to the party itself not being real. It's a front, a kind of play acting entirely for Chris' benefit. After all, he's who they're all really there to see.
– The stuffed lion next to Rose's bed is because “The lion is a symbol of Christ and of course the Knights Templar.” – When Walter/Roman Armitage is seen out running at night it is because he is training. He believes that with his new body, he could beat Jesse Owens' time.
But nosebleeds can also be caused by a torn internal carotid artery and in that case the bleeding can be fast enough to be life threatening. It's also possible for a milder nosebleed to block your airway and asphyxiate you. A 47-year-old man from Gravesend, Kent died this way in 2011.
Fortunately, most aren't serious. The most common cause of nosebleeds is dry air. Hot, low-humidity climates or heated indoor air cause dry air. Both environments cause your nasal membrane (the delicate tissue inside your nose) to dry out and become crusty or cracked.
The instances in which nosebleed is potentially fatal are those in which there is a history of recent head injury, severe arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease or an underlying vascular tumor in the nasal chambers.
As what appear to be police lights appear, Rose feigns pleas for help. She's not just a psychopathic racist; she's also a canny manipulator of the subterranean, systemic racism in the world at large. And this makes her easily the most insidious, terrifying character in the whole film.
Like, “Rose's smile represents the arrogance of White America. She wants Chris to choke her because it plays into White fearmongering. She has made Chris into a stereotype other bad-faith racists can point to. She becomes a martyr.
