They all united against the common enemy, and so was fought the Battle of Five Armies in the valley of Dale. Thorin was killed in the battle, as were his sister-sons Kíli and Fíli. As his "rightful heir," Dáin succeeded Thorin as King under the Mountain, and King of all of Durin's folk.
In The Lord of the Rings Online, Prince Durin is the son of King Thorin III. In the game's story-line other Dwarves have been given that name and yet proved not to be the Father of the Longbeards returned, so a major part of his motivation is to prove whether he truly is or will be Durin VII.
Durin IV was a King of Durin's folk who ruled the great Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm, and the fourth king to have the name Durin. Like his father he bore a Ring of Power.
Gimli was born in the Ered Luin in the Third Age, son of Glóin. Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.
Though Gimli has no children, he is not the last Dwarf of Middle-earth. After the fall of Sauron, his people continued to thrive in the Lonely Mountain. Gimli made his home in Rohan, in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, and many of his kinsfolk came with him.
It is also stated in Unfinished Tales that Gimli was prevented from traveling with his father on the Quest of Erebor because Thorin and Company thought him too young, though Gimli, being in his sixties, considered himself ripe for adventure and was disappointed to be left behind.
It is quite likely that Thorin knew both Fili and Kili died defending him. Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death.
The Balrog killed Durin VI, the Dwarf-King of Khazad-dûm, whereafter it was called Durin's Bane by the Dwarves. Avarice, principally for mithril, drove the dwarves to go too deep and awaken the Balrog.
Going by Tolkien's Appendix A on Durin's Folk in The Two Towers, Gimli was a royal and remote descendant of Durin I (and Rings of Power's Durin IV in this process). Gimli's ancestor, Borin, was the brother of Dain I who was crowned King and carried on Durin's lineage.

Durin the Deathless was the very first Dwarf in the world of The Lord of the Rings. There were two reasons that Durin earned the title Deathless. Durin the Deathless was an ancestor of important characters from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

After the battle, Dáin thanked the Great Eagles for their timely intervention, crowning their chief with gold and swearing the Dwarves to everlasting friendship with them.
For more than five millennia, the Balrog hibernated in his deep hiding place at the roots of the mountains in Khazad-dûm. He remained undisturbed throughout the Second Age and most of the Third, before the mithril-miners of dwarf-King Durin VI awoke him in T.A. 1980.
The fear of Elves is more spiritual, so the demonic creatures of shadow and flame are unsurprisingly horrifying to them. Legolas doesn't appear to have any hesitation in his actions throughout the films, but it's clear that his blood runs cold when a Balrog appears in the Mines of Moria.
Thorin is the heir to the dominant line of Durin I, but Dain I Ironfoot, is also from the Line of Durin. His grandfather Gror is the youngest son of Dain I.
Durin and Elrond proved to be a very elvish dwarf and a very dwarven elf. Although they began The Rings of Power estranged, their loyalty and love for one another flourished. Durin even willingly disregarded his father and King's wishes to save the elves', but really Elrond's life by mining mithril.
