THE SON centers on Peter (Hugh Jackman), whose hectic life with his infant and new partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby) is upended when his ex-wife Kate (Laura Dern) appears at his door to discuss their son Nicholas (Zen McGrath), who is now a teenager.
This 2022 movie "The Son" is also written and directed by Zeller, it examines the difficulty that normal working and achieving parents have understanding and dealing with a teenage son who doesn't feel right in the world. A son who goes to school on his first day but skips out all days after, unknown to his parents.
As he leaves to shower and his parents discuss how things seem better, Nicholas shoots himself dead. Traumatized by his son's suicide, years later Peter fantasizes about what Nicholas' life could have been like if he had lived. Beth comforts him while he expresses guilt and remorse, and blames himself for the tragedy.
“They are asking themselves if it's their fault,” says Zeller. “It is a story of how guilt can blind us.” Zeller, 43, has firsthand experience of living with a troubled teen – and, indeed, dedicated the film to his stepson, Gabriel.
Regardless, the story is not based on real life, even if it feels like a true story. The play version of The Son, originally titled in French (Le Fils), is the final play in a trilogy that began with The Father and The Mother.
