He is encouraged to participate but refuses. After unwittingly urinating on a sacred tree, Mark is lured away by one of the female commune members. That night, Josh sneaks out of bed to take illicit photographs of sacred texts. He is caught by a half-naked man wearing Mark's skinned face and is bludgeoned to death.
Mark's death was somewhat foreshadowed in the initial scenes of Midsommar, as the children playing "skin the fool" is a direct reference to Mark's skin being flayed after he urinates on a sacred artifact.
Adding to the list of Midsommar hidden details is that Simon's method of death was based on a real Norse execution ritual known as the Blood Eagle. It's made even more terrifying because Simon was alive while it happened and was still alive when Christian found him.

It's heavily implied that Pelle's own parents were sacrificed in their own time, as Pelle tells Dani that they burned in a fire when he was a child. However, having brought the May Queen to Hårga, Pelle is spared from being sacrificed and instead given the highest honors.
Ultimately, Dani becomes the May Queen she was always destined to become and sacrifices Christian to complete the mid-summer ritual. The most unexpected element in the film is not his death nor is it her being crowned the May Queen, it is actually how many times Aster overtly foreshadowed these events.
At the end of the movie "Midsommar", do you think Dani stays with the cult? She does. It is her new family. The scene in which Dani cries with several members of the cult is set against the beginning scene, in which she cries in the presence of her boyfriend, and he is shown to be rather annoyed by her mood swings.
Death. An elder member named Father Odd tells Connie that Simon has already left without her. Suspicious, Connie decides to leave on her own, but Father Odd leads her away. Later, Connie's wail is heard in the distance where Father Odd and several other cultists murder her by drowning her in water.
Before Christian could leave, he was incapacitated. Having fully embraced her grief and May Queen duties, Dani had to choose between Christian and a random person from the commune to finish the ritual. In her angry state, she picked Christian to die. He's then dressed in bearskin and burned alive with five others.
