Coral (Elizabeth Perkins) Elizabeth Perkins' appearance in Finding Nemo was all too brief, playing Coral, the wife of Marlin and mother of Nemo who dies at the fins of a barracuda.
After losing his wife and family to the ocean, Marlin is left alone to raise his only surviving child, Nemo. He vows never to let anything happen to his son. A loving and responsible father, Marlin keeps his noble promise throughout Nemo's early years.
Coral knew Marlin when he was a young fish who really enjoyed clowning around. One day, Coral revealed that she would love a home with an ocean view, so the devoted Marlin managed to get her a much-prized anemone at the drop-off—with a view of the whole ocean.
Marlin proves to be emotionally disabled from the traumatic loss of his wife, and eggs. “Like many single parents who have survived a tragedy, Marlin turns neurotically overprotective of his son (Germain, 2003)”. Marlin helps represent the struggle with chronic anxiety, and the effect it has on relationships.
Nemo hatches as an undifferentiated hermaphrodite (as all clownfish are born) while his father transforms into a female now that his female mate is dead. Since Nemo is the only other clownfish around, he becomes a male and mates with his father (who is now a female).
That's right, we're talking about the opening scene in the movie, where a giant barracuda attacks the home of Nemo's dad, Marlin, and ends up eating Nemo's mom and all of his future brothers and sisters. It's heartbreaking, tragic and a reminder to why Marlin is so protective over his only son, Nemo.
“Finding Nemo” would have ended very differently if it reflected the true lives of clownfish. That's because Nemo's dad would have turned into a female before he returned from his journey across the ocean, scientists have revealed.

Barracuda have a formidable reputation as ruthless predators—even depicted in Disney Pixar's Finding Nemo as the merciless villain that kills Nemo's mother. Widely distributed around the world, these ferocious fish are commonly found in tropical regions with warm water and plenty of food.
Parents guide: Possibly frightening scenes: This movie definitely has some tense moments for little kids. The opening scene where the barracuda attacks Marlin's family is one you might not want to show the youngest of kids. Even the scene where Nemo gets captured might scare sensitive viewers.
Coral is a minor character in Disney/Pixar's 2003 animated film, Finding Nemo. She was the mate of Marlin and mother of Nemo and approximately 399 unborn clownfish. Unfortunately, Coral and her entire family were attacked by a barracuda in which all of them except Marlin and Nemo perished.

Coral and all but one egg are killed in a barracuda attack, leaving Marlin to care for the last remaining baby fish (whose egg was scarred by that mean ol' barracuda) all on his own. Marlin decides to call his son Nemo because Coral really liked that name. Guess she was a big Jules Verne fan.
